Hefti's grandson lived in Portland (he may still).  We traded some emails when HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE had just come out and he wasn't aware of its release.

There is no $80 fee for the Kindle.

The mention of $80 in the David Pogue relates to the price of the cheapest Kindle. There is more than one model.

Here is the portion of the article mentioning $80

David Pogue NYT Nov. 13, 2011

This new Kindle is now so small, it fits in a pants pocket. But again, the news here is the price: $80.

Do you have any idea how astonishing that number is? The first Kindle, born four years ago this month, cost $400. This model weighs 40 percent less, occupies a third less space and stores seven times as many books — at 20 percent of the price.

At this rate, by next year, Amazon will pay you to buy a Kindle.

You can pay a little more for various perks. For example, the $80 model displays ads. Never while you’re reading — only on the “sleep” screen and in a strip across the bottom of the Home screen. Most are discount deals, which makes them a lot more palatable. But you can get this Kindle without the ads for $110.

If you sign up for Amazon Prime, which costs $79 a year and which originally got you free shipping of items bought through Amazon you get free access to a "lending library" maintained by Amazon which features books for the Kindle but Amazon Prime is not required to purchase a Kindle.

Thanks for the info, Ben (and Charles). :)

This was not our Charles Pogue, but David Pogue, the NYT Tech columnist.

I have just weeded my cookbook collection and moved what's left to the other bookshelf in the kitchen.  I've filled the empty shelves with my travel files and books.  Does that mean I'd rather be planning trips than meals?  Probably...

And... It's not raining in Glendale today. In fact, it's quite a beautiful sunny day in the almost-San Gabriel Valley.

WARNING:  This post contains graphic descriptions.  Not for the faint of heart! (Well, not really that awful, but bad enough)

Today I am moving around in a somnambulic state.  I had an absolutely horrible night, last night.  While watching the football game last night, I started to notice the onset of shall we say digestive problems.  Trust me when I say that this can be the worst problem imaginable for someone who is not able to walk, let alone run.  By the time the game was over, I had started my journeys back and forth to the bathroom.  These continued every half hour to hour for the entire night.

Sometime around three this morning, while sitting in the bathroom, I moved wrong (I guess) and managed to pinch off a nerve and / or pulled a muscle in my lower back.  Somehow, I managed toe keep from screaming out loud, but the pain added yet another factor to my neverending night.

Somewhere, around 8 or 9 this morning the digestive symtoms disappeared, but the pinched nerve / pulled muscle pain continued.  In order to get some sleep this morning, I had to take a muscle relaxer and eventually a pain pill.  I am now up after three or four hours of solid sleep, but I feel very much like a Zombie.

End of Story!

One of the rising young stars of the Seattle Mariners was murdered today in Rotterdam.  Apparently, his brother has been arrested.
