ANKHS FOR THE MEMORIES

Well, you've read the notes, you've ankhed for the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to figure out what an ankh is.

BK: Good to see that you are enjoying Bruno Cremor as Maigret. I think he's perfect in the role and the films are so well made - excellent period atmosphere. I've got most of the DVD box sets - box set 5 is one I still have to get. I didn't care for the Michael Gambon series and I've never seen the Jean Gabin films but would like to (I don't think any of the French DVDs have English subtitles?).

There is no $80 fee for the Kindle.

The mention of $80 in the David Pogue relates to the price of the cheapest Kindle. There is more than one model.

Here is the portion of the article mentioning $80

David Pogue NYT Nov. 13, 2011

This new Kindle is now so small, it fits in a pants pocket. But again, the news here is the price: $80.

Do you have any idea how astonishing that number is? The first Kindle, born four years ago this month, cost $400. This model weighs 40 percent less, occupies a third less space and stores seven times as many books — at 20 percent of the price.

At this rate, by next year, Amazon will pay you to buy a Kindle.

You can pay a little more for various perks. For example, the $80 model displays ads. Never while you’re reading — only on the “sleep” screen and in a strip across the bottom of the Home screen. Most are discount deals, which makes them a lot more palatable. But you can get this Kindle without the ads for $110.

If you sign up for Amazon Prime, which costs $79 a year and which originally got you free shipping of items bought through Amazon you get free access to a "lending library" maintained by Amazon which features books for the Kindle but Amazon Prime is not required to purchase a Kindle.

A quote from Sondheim that ties in with what BK was saying yesterday and somewhat in his notes this morning:

" ... for every piece of thoughtful observation about other people's work, there was a piece of mean-spirited snottiness – some of which, I regret to say, made me laugh and wish I were young enough again to participate in those kinds of exchanges."

This is what I read and must have misunderstood. I thought you needed to pay this fee in order to download the books, mags etc. Thanks for the clarification.

TOD: Juliette Binoche in "The English Patient"
Catherine Deneuve in just about anything
Maurice Chevalier in any movie with Jeanette MacDonald
Francois Truffaut in his movies
Isabelle Hupert in just about everything but "Heaven's Gate"
Anna Karina in "Band of Outsiders"

Way too many others to keep track of.

Good morning, all! It's been another email morning: the cast of EILEEN, DEAREST ENEMY logistics, and social calls. I will spend some time this morning listening seriously to the Act Two tracks of EILEEN, and then I've got more ROBERTA work to tackle before next Monday.

I cannot locate my full scores for DEAREST ENEMY, so I must have shipped them to either the Library of Congress or Miami University in the past 6 years. Since I need a set to prepare the new score and parts, I asked R&H to make me a set. The originals have been sent to my friende Joseph, who's doing the engraving, so tomorrow I need to pick up the scores from him, photocopy them and return them to him. The logistics are now resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

I got a beautiful email from my beloved Rachel Kelly, my Irish soubrette on EILEEN, who's singing the role of Beatrice in Berlioz' opera BEATRICE ET BENEDICT for Sir Colin Davis, the UK's leading Berlioz conductor, and I had to wish her luck. I also heard from Steven LaBrie, who's back from singing Schaunard in LA BOHEME in Santa Barbara, and I'm happy that he feels it went well.

More coffee!
