I forget the name of my oil change place.....but it is associated with the Big O Tire Store next door.   They don't do any engine or other work, so sometimes they ask about wiper blades or changing transmission fluid, but that's about it.

My DVD recorder won't finalize my disks the way it's supposed to, so none of my disks will play after I burn them.  8-(

I think I'm getting tired of musicals that feel they have to apologize for being musicals. I loved the movie "Once" and I'm looking forward to hearing the score for the theater, but this nonsense was in a story on the show as posted on Playbill.com:

"The songs do not seek to tell this simple story in a brash in-character way; this is a new era of show tune where music punctuates and gives expressive life to the characters' moods and hopes. (After the Guy and Girl and their pals have a 24-hour recording session, there is an a cappella number that defies convention and description, and has helped create buzz for the show.)"

A new era of show tune? Hogwash. This technique has been used time and time again. And since when are character songs all "brash"?

Rant ended.

All the ornaments are off the tree and packed away.  Now it's up to Richard to take the tree apart and store it for another year - well, 11 months...

*And since the line was surprisingly short for the $20 rush tickets for tonight's performance of FAUST - it Des McAnuff's new production - I went ahead an got in line, and ended up with a center orchestra seat, just seven seats off the aisle!

**And Joseph Calleja is out tonight with a cold, so Roberto Alabna will be singing "Faust"! -And he's still scheduled to sing Cavaradossi tomorrow night in TOSCA!

And we'll see if I end up taking a nice nap instead considering I'm basically running on five hours of sleep. And FAUST is a long opera.

Welcome back to Reality, DR Ron Pulliam! ;)

I hope the "stress" of the holidays had dissipated by the time you flew back to the West Coast.

Thanks to DR JOSE for the very entertaining Theatre Care Package.

It's funny(?), but each time I gather those programs and send them off to you, I'm always amazed at just how many shows and concerts I've actually seen. -There's usually so many things that I know I missed or wasn't able to see due to work, and I only seem to remember those. -If that makes sense.

Jennifer:  The ending of the US in terms of Lisbeth seeing what she sees is exactly the same as the ending in the extended SWEDISH version - the extended SWEDISH version adds about thirty minutes of footage that wasn't in the SWEDISH version that played in theaters and that thirty minutes is all important.  For me, the CHANGES that the US makes to the ending in other ways, said changes NOT being from the book at all, are not good and completely unnecessary.  And Mr. Fincher and his screenwriter completely blow the emotional wallop of the end of the Vanger part of the story - in the Swedish version that scene is very touching.

I don't know if it was the "extended" version or not, but I watched the Swedish version on DVD and it ran 152 minutes.

I agree that Lisbeth's clandestine actions at the end of the films lead into the 2nd movie, but is there going to be a 2nd American movie?

Based on the box-office returns thus far, that is certainly in question.

Possible Spoilers Ahead:

What I would have done in this first film is have the Christopher Plummer character give Daniel Craig the files, then have a news report that the character who sued Craig (Sorry, I can't recall his name) was arrested.

That would have eliminated the need for Lisbeth stealing the guy's money in this film...and the picture could have ended with Lisbeth seeing Craig with the Robin Wright character, then tossing away his Christmas present.

IF there was a second movie, you could have opened it with Lisbeth stealing the guy's money and proceeded from there.

At least, that's the way I would have done it.

Books are books and movies are movies.

 ;D

You saw the Swedish theatrical version - the extend version is thirty minutes longer and it's better.

I've written ten pages, not jogged, eaten, picked up an important envelope and one package, delivered 160 pages to muse Margaret and am taking a little break.

I find it baffling that they nominated Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris.  But I guess that's typical of my union.  I would have nominated Soderbergh for Contagion, and I know there were other movies I liked much, much better than the Allen.  Fincher was predictable, although I feel it's his least interesting movie in a career that has several uninteresting movies.  I'm looking forward to The Artist and will probably see all five nominated films again on the DGA screen next week.

I haven't seen the US movie so don't know if what they did is the same as the book. RE: the Swedish version, i did not see the extended version. Not sure why they included the scenes in the extended version but not the theatrical version (since this was very crucial).

BK, did you read the books or are you just going by what you've heard was in them?

Did anyone see the movies first? I'm curious if the books would have the same impact if you already knew the whole story (from the movies).
