Elmore, love the notes over the last few days on Merrily. I remember the excitement of hearing that album for the first time and wondering how that show could have failed.

Then, when I was living in Sarasota, Ann Morrison staged a production featuring the original script. Apparently it took some wrangling for her to get the rights to do that. What I saw was a horror almost every time the music stopped. And the audience actively hated it, no matter how good the music sounded and how great the singers were. One woman sitting a few rows in front of me was loud about how much she couldn't stand "Old Friends."

When you're introduced to what a loser Franklin has become, before you have any reason to feel compassion for him, you never feel any differently about him the entire evening, no matter how gorgeous "Our Time" is. Even in the original, when they give the forced moment of reconciliation with Charley as the story returns to the opening scene.

Saw Marc Kudisch at the Crest Theater in Delray Beach, FL last night. It is part of their cabaret series. These are two act version. It was an interesting collection of Broadway, Folk, Rockabilly and other styles. The show was called What Makes Me Tick.

There is no doubt thay Mr. Kudisch has a great singing voice with a wide range, he has a great stage presence, but the show is a little disjointed, the patter doesn't seem to be scripted and he used the word "shit" s couple of times. (A little shocking since most of the audience seems to be in the 60 year and older age range.) I guess I am not used to hearing performers usung curse words in their act.

His patter had a lot of misinformation in it. For example he said that Kander/Ebb's first show before "Cabaret" was Zorba. It was actually the second show after Cabaret and that Zorba influenced Stephen Sondheim. He also attributed Comden and Green as writers of Oklahoma! which we all know isn't correct. Also the time frame seemed to be off. He was born in 1966 (I looked it up) and yet talks about listening to 45's and 78's (Unlikely as there were LPs and tapes) around the age of 8 which brings it into the early 70's. It also seemed as if he was alive in the 50's. He needed to hava more linear approach to his show. He seemed to be all over the place. These mistakes and other is the reason why I don't believe it was scripted and was more off the cuff otherwise these mistakes would have been caught.

Despite being a veteran on the stage in scripted roles he seemed to be uncomfortable in this format. He stood center stage and played to the audience there. He ignored the people in the audience to the left and the right. As oustanding a singer he is the show itself did not click.

Marc Kudisch worked with Bruce on the cast recording of Bells Are Ringing. I kept thinking what would Bruce Kimmel have done with the show to make bring out the best it has to offer.

My ISP has finally despatched the new broadband wireless router which I ordered. It's only taken them 2 weeks to mail it. Fortunately my old router has been working OK for the past week.

Good morning, all! I finally passed out around 2:00am, and I have no idea why I was having trouble sleeping last night. I hate losing an hour and a half of my morning.

Today I will work on the Herbert songs release as well as a bit on DEAREST ENEMY. Now that Ron Raines is free from FOLLIES, I may visit with him today.

DR JohnG, I still think too much of the MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG score is hostile dissonance, but the original production was dreadful. There was a lot of work to polish it by the closing performance, but you were still stuck with paying full price to see what was essentially a college production. Those twenty year-old performers had no comprehension of being a 40+ alcoholic, creep, letch, whatever, and only Lonny Price, who's a much better actor than director, and Jason Alexander came off well. I would swear in both performances there was no "reconciliation" between Charlei and Frank.

DR TCB - this is the book I got yesterday.

It's interesting with LOTS of pockets with extras.....and nice oversized pictures. Unfortunately, the author is a Lordite and that sort of ruins the last part of the text.....
