Well, I really am a bit tuckered out... And I want to head back to Richmond in the morning before the heat kicks in for the day... So...

Goodnight.

Major fireworks going on at CBS Radford, all clearly visible from my home environment.

A couple of summers ago we actually paid to get into CBS Radford and see the fireworks and some sort of fair they had set up in various soundstages.  A major disappointment, that.

This year I was hell-bent on avoiding uncomfortable crowds and figured out how to do it.  We saw the fireworks above the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island without rubbing elbows with anybody.  True, people stood for the fireworks themselves, but we had ample space between our blanket and the nearest one while hanging around, waiting for them to begin.

And then we could beat a quick retreat.  I'd chosen an express subway stop that was not nearly as crowded as your typical rush hour, and in twenty minutes the are where there fireworks were was miles behind us.

Then we listened to Manhattan Tower.

For how many years have they been getting fireworks to make those amaing "happy faces"  :) ?  It impresses me every time.

SWW, as you requested.

MANDEL BROT

1 cup sugar
1 cup oil
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix the above ingredients, and add

3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Pinch salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¾ cups chopped almonds
(additions might include ¼ cp chocolate chips, dried cherries or be creative-I prefer just the almonds)

Lightly grease a cookie sheet

Make three loaves using the backs of large spoons.  The dough will be sticky.

Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes
Cool
Slice
Turn and bake 7 to 10 minutes
Turn and bake another 7 to 10 minutes
Thank-you, Jane!   :-*

The "slice, turn and bake, repeat" is probably why it sounds (to me) like biscotti.  There's probably a large difference in ingredients, of course.  My baking skills need to be worked on; will do research.

Addendum: "Maldelbrot" not only refers to the cookies, but also to a series of fractals, which has to do with chaos mathematics.

The cookies sound tastier, of course.

The Macy's thing on NBC didn't feature any of the Broadway people. -Unless I missed those whilst I was flipping.

Idina Menzel, Ann Hampton Callaway and Adam Pascal (and maybe someone else) sang during the fireworks.  They weren't shown on screen.  Brian Stokes Mitchell's name was mentioned as a performer, but I didn't see him or recognize his voice during the parts that I watched.  I didn't see the whole thing, but I did tape it.  I'll have to check it out tomorrow.

Jennifer Holliday is singing "This is the Moment" from Jekyll & Hyde.  It sounds like there are some new lyrics.  I don't recognize a couple of lines.

Cut to the chase, before going through all the day's posts.

Most of my day was spent at work, which was actually enjoyable (save for my first obnoxious customer ever...bleh).  We made our target on sales, plus a couple of hundred.

After, der Brucer parked the car almost across the street from where I work, and we caught a shuttle bus into downtown Rehoboth.  From there, it was a quick jaunt over to the hotel hosting the fireworks dinner and rooftop watch.  The dinner (with fried chicken and BBQ pork ribs) was quite good, unexpectedly so for a hotel kitchen.  A DJ was playing, and couples (of every mixture) were dancing.  Good times were being had.  After, on the roof, we oohed and ahhed as the fireworks shot up over the Atlantic.  Towards the end, a group of men started singing the Star Spangled Banner, and I joined in...about an octave lower than anyone else.  Right as we reached "The land of the free...and the home of the brave," right between the lines, in fact, the final barrage of fireworks lit up the sky and boomed over the water.  We couldn't have timed it better if we had tried.

The only bad news is that a rather well known local news collumnist named Fay, a friend of ours, heard someone singing in what she was caught calling a "distinctive voice," and when I asked if it was lower than everyone else's, she said yes.  I must defend my reputation, somehow.  I believe she now mistakenly thinks of me as having a good singing voice, and everyone knows that I sound like Jabba the Hutt, only lower!

Oh, and minutes after the fireworks ended, we had a brief downpour.  Again, timing is everything!

As I've told singers who were worried they'd forget some of the lines, "Make something up.  It's bound to be better than the actual lyric."  MOMENTOUS MOMENT?
The song's a howler in more ways than one.

No, we didn't neglect to tell them - it was in the casting breakdowns.  I merely want Tammy to REMIND them in case it somehow slipped by.  The casting breakdown services insist you mention nudity - they don't accept the listing unless you do.

The play is five characters.  The three character play went away.
I don't see how there should be a problem, unless the character is supposed to be performing jumping jacks at the time.  That could cause bruises.

So my topic of the day is do you prefer a movie to be subtitled or dubbed?

Do you avoid subtitled movies?

Do you have friends who turn up there noses at seeing a subtitled movie?
I much prefer a film to be subtitled.  Sometimes, I'll watch an English-language feature with the subtitles for the hearing impared, simply to keep the sound level down while der B is sleeping.  Subtitles don't bother me one whit.

Which means, I don't avoid subtitles.  As for friends who turn up their noses, I usually try to find out if they go all the way to eleven, or stop at ten.  (Sort of a Spinal Tap ref.)

Arms and the Girl is on CD
A good one to listen to today, of all days
Great job of giving references to how you knew it was on CD, Noel.

Not.

Although, now that we know it exists, it is on our list of CDs to find.  Dorothy Fields has long been a favorite of mine.

That came about because of Stephen Sondheim at one point calling his song "Losing My Mind" "A Gershwin tune with a Dorothy Field lyric."  When I posted a query at another site as to what he might have ment by that, someone simply replied "well, he means that he wrote a lyric that sounds like Dorothy Fields wrote it."  No hint was given what a Dorothy Fields lyric might sound like.  I doubt that the respondant had even the slightest idea who Dorothy Fields was.

Since then, of course, I started doing the research, and have found her writing to be direct, character-full, earthy, witty, and wistful.  She was, quite simply, magnificent.

Back from the Shakespeare in Barnsdale Park and what a delightful time it was.  8 people doing all the roles, bravely prevailing against sirens, a band playing part of the time somewhere, and fireworks explosions.  Quite fun.  No real pretense of costumes or scenery, just the words and wit.  The little amphitheatre was quite nice.  We sat right up front, or more correctly, I sprawled right up front, lying on my back.  It was just like the way I watch television.  Very laid back and casual, we ate on the green beforehand.  All in all, a quite nice fourth!

Generally, for me it's gotta be...in glorious Technicolor, breathtaking CinemaScope…and stereophonic sound (and English Language spoken dialog)

der Brucer
One area where we are obviously at odds.

I can't wait for the Matterhorn mountaineers to climb up, and for Tinkerbell to decend down right before the fireworks start.

Time soon to partake of some Barbie-Cue (sans Ken, as the two-timing bitch seems to have taken up with some Aussie dude named Blaine -- who looks decidedly conflicted about his sexual orientation. So there may be some interesting Barbie-Blaine stories to come.).
I always thought a Barbie Queue would be a line of the dolls, in costume through the years, waiting for a bus or something.

DR JRand wrote: "Whew....Audrey Hepburn does some really clumsy acting in CHARADE....her inflections and reactions are weird....not sure if it's the editing or the dubbing....but it ain't right."
Hoo, boy, do we disagree on that one! I think her performance is fetching, disarming, delightful, splendid. Can't imagine anyone doing it any better.
Instead of Thandie Newton, they could have cast Cher.

Get it?

Cher?  Cher-ade?

Oh, ferget it.

I was thinking, during tonight's fireworks, of that title I mentioned a few days ago, Firefly Night.  A sequence involving fireworks, and the 4th of July, would work quite well.

But I still don't have a plot.

Hasn't this frenzy brought us to page seven yet?  Drat.

I'm actually sort of hungry, despite having eaten a healthy-sized dinner.  At least it seemed healthy-sized, but if you actually add up what I ate all day long, it wasn't really all that much.

I just finished a game of Bookworm (yes, it's addictive...and I'm not even that good compared to others...I only got 122,000 or so).  Anyway, I think that this is longest word that I've ever gotten and I'm sure that it's the word where I got the most points ever!  It was early in the game, but nothing else came close.  Just had to share:
