Not too much rain yet but lots of wind --  we lost the front gate to our 6 foot cedar stockade fence --- looks liek the rest of the fence may be going as well

Hurrincane Gloria in 1986  really devastated the area -  that probably was the worst -- large parts of long Island (including my neck of the woods) were out of power for 10 -14 days

I was living in  a windowless basement apartment at the time so I moved into my boyfriend's house for the duration - he had a four bedroom house and three room mates.

His parents, brother, sister and her husband all moved in as well so it was a little crowded

TOD:

In September 1999, I was staying at the Omega Institute when, towards the end of the week, the remains of Hurricane Floyd came through.  On Wednesday night, the storm was just approaching but there was a heavy rain.  The workshop I was attending, a theatre/dance/poetry hybrid, held an open-to-all night time session that culminated in a clothing-optional outdoors dance in the rain.  A good time was had by all.

But the weather got progressively worse the following day.  The camp lost electricity and the dining hall was shut down.  There was an impromptu gathering at the cafe, where we were treated to free pizza and melting ice cream and a sing-a-long concert by that week's visiting songstress (whose name escapes me.) A good time was being had by all until they announced that, because of safety regulations, we needed to leave the cafe and return to our cabins.

I have no idea what they were thinking as far as "safety" was concerned--the wind and rain were so bad that I was lucky I found my cabin.  And once inside, I didn't feel much safer--the walls and roof creeked with every blast of wind.  I seriously considered sleeping in the bathtub in the bathroom, but I was also afraid of lightning hitting the plumbing (there was lots of lightning and thunder, too!)  somehow, I eventually fell asleep.

The following morning, there was still no electricity and no running water in my cabin.  The dining hall had only cold cereal and fruit salad (but they somehow had hot coffee). Trees and limbs were down all over the campus.  The final workshop session was cut short.  A few of us found a place to take an ice cold shower at the spa.  When we got to the Rhinecliff train station, we found that there was no Amtrak service.  But at the Greyhound bus terminal in Kingston, I got to meet Ralph Waite ( from THE WALTONS).

The end.

The blizzard of  January   1996 was pretty bad too --- Vixdad was working in Greenlelt  Maryland at the time and his office ran a late holiday party  in Washington DC

I left 2 year old Vixter with my parents and drove down on Friday aftenoon-  the party was Saturday evening --

His office put us up in a beautiful hotel about 2 blocks from the Capitol -- our room had a capital view of the Capitol -

It started snowing during the party  and there were already several inches on the ground when we got back to our room

We couldn't see the Capitol anymore due to the whiteout conditions--- we were not able to see the Capitol again until Monday -- it took until Wednesday for us to be able to get out and get back to  Greenbelt to the hotel where Vidxdad was living during the week

They reopened the Thruway on Thursday and i took off to get back home before I got stuck again

Apparently Anderson Cooper's talk show, the one that helped DR Danise, has been canceled.

Probably due to the lack of speed they showed in repairing Danise's home

And despite all the dire warnings on the news and all the announced business and school closings, the HR manager at my place of work sent out an email last night stating that the office would be open this morning be cause the building landlord saw no reason to close it.

I sent my manager an e-mail first thing this morning informing him that I was "working at home". Turned out that he had the same idea, as did everyone on my team.

At 11:30, the HR manager sent out a message that everyone who came in had to leave at noon.

And so it goes...

I just found the story - apparently they were sailing from CT to FL -  why they didn't dock somewhere with this  storm coming is beyond comprehension -  14 were rescued but two of the crew are missing

The show prolly blew out its budget on shipping that humongous washer/dryer set.

Last night's news reports were filled with interviews with residents of the barrier islands at the Jersey shore (where Sandy is primed to hit) who decided that they were not going to follow evacuation orders and ride out the storm.  Most of them mentioned how Hurricane Irene turned into a bust (for this area, anyway.)

Today, there are reports of these people making desperate calls to be rescued, putting first responders at risk.  Idiots!

In other news, I just spent more than 30 minutes on the phone with the travel agent who's setting up the England trip for Richard's seminary.  The basics of our trip are now complete.  We will stay with the group in the Russell Square area of London before the week in Norwich and near Westminster Abbey for 4 days on our own afterwards.

Electricity has not blinked here yet, but I wouldn't doubt that we'll lose it sometime in the coming hours.  I'm keeping my phone and iPad on the chargers just in case.

Wind is picking up...
