Congrats to DR Elmore for the Filichia, which I am reading now.

I love Peter Filichia! He's always positive in his criticism and generous in his praise; he's a true mensch. I admire him greatly.

His menschness (menschheit? menschosity?) was apparent the time I met him, the same day I met with y'all DRs and BK for the first time back in June.  What's really weird is that he thought he knew me from somewhere or other, and I felt a little bad having to insist otherwise.

I read that the Scandinavian series THE BRIDGE is being remade as a British/French TV series. Presumably the body will be found in the Channel Tunnel! There is also an American remake being made by FX Network which is set on the US/Mexican border. Sweden/Denmark are also making THE BRIDGE 2.

TOD:

DVD - VIPERE AU POING (VIPER IN THE FIST). This excellent 2004 French film was on TV recently but I missed part of it, so I searched out the DVD. Fascinating autobiographical story from a book by Herve Bazin who suffered as a child from a horrifyingly strict mother.

Re the notes:  I bought that PBS Broadway set on the Black Friday deal, too, figuring I probably had never seen all of it anyway, and at that price, etc. etc. etc.

But BLAND?  Oh my, yes.  My own word for things like this:  STERILE.  Also see:  Safe.  Glossy.  Known territory.  Predictable.  Utterly without "edge" or the actual excitement of the real musical theater it's honoring.  Only in certain clips does one sit up and take notice.  But really, then, all you need are the clips.  Sadly, that seems to be the very nature of shows like this.  Watching it, it has "pledge drive" written all over it.

TOD:

CD - Today I must get off of my bloomin' arse and, well, get back on it again and study ADRIFT IN McCOW so I dare show up at these auditions on Monday.

DVD - In the spirit of the season, I'll be checking out this 2-disc set of Bing Crosby Christmas Specials.  All I know is that one of the four complete shows contained therein is co-hosted (or special guested?) by Mary Martin.

BLU - Jacques Tati, PLAYTIME.  Hope to get to that one at the upcoming 70mm festival at the Walter Reade.

He's really good and I certainly enjoy reading him, but you couldn't say he is always positive in his criticism. He just isn't nasty. His notes on Scandalous were not exactly positive, though he certainly could have been as cruel as some of the other critics were.

I'm just glad that he got the Herbert set. I'm still enjoying it thoroughly. BTW: Santa delivered "Eileen." I have a tradition of not listening to recordings I buy in December (unless they're Christmas CDs), until after Christmas.

Lifeless is another word.

I thought this series had nothing new to offer to its target audience.

TOD:

DVD: The Ref, Dark Shadows, Don't Look Now

CD: This Christmas, plenty of Christmas music

Car CD: Neil Young's autobiography. It's 11 CDs long and I may not make it through. I'm on disc 3 and it covers similar ground as disc 2.

Is it really great, like, put-it-on-my-list great?
I think I passed it about a hundred times in Burbank.
