TOD:

DVD: The Ref, Dark Shadows, Don't Look Now

CD: This Christmas, plenty of Christmas music

Car CD: Neil Young's autobiography. It's 11 CDs long and I may not make it through. I'm on disc 3 and it covers similar ground as disc 2.

I love "The Ref"! what a fantastic black comedy. "Just shoot her."

Is this the Donald Sutherland-Julie Christie film? Scared the hell out of me! One of my favorite films.

And I broke down and ordered the new  toupee.......it should be here next week.....we shall see what one thinks......

If you're happy with it, DRJRand62, let me know: my 74 year old neighbor has a jet black one that doesn't fit and slides around his nearly bald head like a yamulke, It's really awful, I suspect he uses shoe polish on it,  and I feel embarrassed for him. I think that he believes it makes him look younger to his Puerto Rican hustlers, but he looks an aging dandy from a Restoration comedy or Lady Wishfort trying to be young for Mirabel.

I read that the Scandinavian series THE BRIDGE is being remade as a British/French TV series. Presumably the body will be found in the Channel Tunnel! There is also an American remake being made by FX Network which is set on the US/Mexican border. Sweden/Denmark are also making THE BRIDGE 2.

This is so irritating on so many levels.  Why don't they think of their OWN idea.  They will never come close to the greatness of the original (which I raved about here) just as The Killing did not come close, just as Wallander did and does not come close.  The Bridge is beautifully done and they will never find two leads who will equal the original cast, sorry.  Especially the leading lady.

I'm up, shaved, and will shortly shower and then be on my way to somewhere in North Hollywood - not all that far from where we were for the last two days.  In fact, I could stop at the Kansas City Barbecue after if I was so inclined.

The reviews in yesterday's Variety and Hollywood Reporter for LES MISERABLES were just so-so.

Very disappointing.

Absolutely agree. These remakes will never be as good as the original.

DVD - It's a Pleasure starring Miss Sonja Henie and Mr Michael O'Shea......in TECHNICOLOR....a most entertaining movie from International Pictures....not long before they merged with Universal Pictures.

CD - Sandy Bainum and also some swing dance CD's
Do you like "It's a Pleasure"? I've got a copy but I found the drama overly melodramatic. Still, she skates ...

Yes to both. "The Ref" is not just one of my favorite Christmas movies, it's one of my all-time favorite movies. Whenever I'm feeling low, I can watch people be uglier to each other than most of the people I know are capable of.

TOD:

Busy weekend ahead, but hope to finish up the 1930 film SUNNY (starring Marilyn Miller) which I DVR'd from TCM, and have watched half of. Cute film.

And if time is on my side, I will get to one of the 1960s Shochiku sci fi films from the new Criterion set. Possibly GENOCIDE.

You know, sometimes there's just no other way to begin a post than with your basic

OMG

Because you're not going to believe what was in my mailbox today.

My SUNDAYS AND CYBELE and 23 PACES TO BAKER STREET DVDs, that's what.  I naturally ass-umed these were the replacements that only went out on Monday.  Besides, the package was sent PAR AVION so that's why this one not only got here, but got here so fast...  right?

Well, if you ass-umed that right along with me, you would be wrong.  It's the original shipment from 11/13, sent airmail, delivered on 12/7.  And now that I think about it, they always go airmail.

I immediately put these on the player and checked them out, because both DVDs were floaters, so even though they looked pristine I needed to be sure they're fine.  And they are.  CYBELE looks incredible, but I won't have time to properly watch it till Sunday (how fitting).

This is wonderful, because all that matters, first and foremost, is that I finally have them in hand.  It'll be even more wonderful when the replacements arrive and test out okay, because I'll be able to pass the duplicates along to someone who will appreciate them.  Anyone here who's interested, you must be able to play Region 2 and PAL-format DVDs.
