Second day back at work is so far better than the first.  At least, I didn't oversleep an hour this morning...

That's OK. I did it for you.

Good morning, all!  It was too cold to get out of bed soI slept in.

Around 11 am, I will head to midtown. On the way,I will stop at the 68th St post office to mail a carton, and then I will have lunch with Roberta Staats of the Cole Porter Trust. We've been making and breaking lunch dates snce October, so it will be great to see her, catch u[ and laugh at our friends' foibles.

When I get back, I have to begin laundry, and that's my day.

I have been playing DARLING OF THE DAY all morning. I've also got the original 7-minute overture and demos of three cut songs; "Putney On The Thames" just brings a huge smile to my day.

I wanted to record the Mummer's Parade string bands while I was at my sister's house on New Years Day, so I had to make some room on the DVR.  One of the movies that I deleted to make space was HOLY MATRIMONY with Monty Wooley.  Now I have to keep an eye out for it to record again--I want to see if it is the source material for DARLING OF THE DAY.

Re BARNUM (note: not the DR)...  I was surprised, too, that a high school would tackle this, but apparently it isn't all that uncommon, including the tightrope.  They're going to build the already large stage out over the orchestra pit area (orchestra's on stage for this) which will give them a great space for the circus venue.

I rememeber that Joe Layton and David Mitchell originally wanted to have Dale sail off in a hotair balloon from the stage and up over the audience at the end of the first act, but scrapped that idea because the insurance would have been astronomical.  I don't think that would have impressed me as much as the tightwalk walk.

I'm up, I'm up.  I was up at five-thirty, couldn't get back to sleep until about seven-thirty, but somehow I think I must have gotten close to eight hours of sleep.

You're right. Dale had to do the tightrope walk. A machine would have run the balloon. I think we'd all rather see the performer actually do something above and beyond.

A.R.T.'s revival of PIPPIN is opening tonight, reimagined into a circus/Cirqe Du Soile milieu by director Diane Paulus.  Back at my college in 1986, a couple of us theatre majors proposed a similar production of the show.  All the department heads said that it was a hackneyed idea.

All of this discussion about BARNUM is making me feel so special.

I am ignoring the fact that it is not about me.

Today I am having lunch with a buddy of mine who I have not seen in ages. We worked together in retail almost 20 years ago.

He now works as a biology teacher and football coach, which normally would mean we'd have absolutley nothing in common to talk about. Still, it should be fun to catch-up.

It might still be a hackneyed idea. But that doesn't mean hackneyed ideas don't work. (It would be like saying that it was hackneyed to slam a door in a farce.)

Thursday evening greetings from Russell Square!  Our 7:30 flight finally left Newark at 11pm last night.  The delay actually worked in our favor, hotel-wise.  If we'd arrived on time at 7am we would have had a lot more time before our room was ready.  As it turned out, we checked our luggage at the hotel and just had time for lunch and a look at our immediate surroundings.  Naps and showers later, we're at Starbucks for wi-fi, which costs an arm and a leg at the hotel.

It is much more the source than the actual novel BURIED ALIVE. The movie is now avilable as a commercial DVD.

Maybe he can pimp out a football player for you and you can pretend the kid is 75 years old.

I was a stage hand in college and worked Barnum when the touring show came through Iowa City.  I helped set up the tight rope and held my breath during that scene, not because I thought the actor would fall (can't rememeber who did the tour) but because I was afraid the tightrope wouldn't hold up

Just listened to the Broadway and London cast recordings of BARNUM, and now I get what the two piano players have to do:  start with what's in the book and improvise -- especially judging from the London one, but there's some amazing stuff on both.  I can see why DR ELMORE made special mention of those players.  Oy!  I'm afraid my form of improvising will be to copy as best I can what they've done.

Got the BBC DVD to watch later.

We flew last night with several 20-somethings who were very impressed with themselves because they were on their way to England for graduate study.  Wouldn't they be surprised to learn that this gray-haired couple is here for the same reason?
