Anyone who enjoys a good mystery should love "Chinatown." It's a cracking good yarn with one of the best screenplays ever. That last part might make some think it's pretentious or dull. Far from it. It really is a great piece of entertainment.

That said, I can understand how knowing the movie would help explain why in "Outside the Box," the Jake character suddenly has a bandage on his nose.

I don't see "getting" any of it, period, if one hasn't seen the movie.  I suppose one might smile at a well-known reference or two, but -- trust us, you ain't getting it!   :)

I mean, a lot of people have some general sense of what Travis Bickle's "You looking at me?" is in reference to, but ... still, not really.

I would have gotten it from having read the MAD magazine version of Chinatown as a kid -- my access to it since the movie was rated R and verboten to me at the time.

But I guess you're right.

And I just realized I've done it again -- quoted the line as "you lookin' at me" instead of "you talkin' to me".

I wonder how that ever got carved into my poor brain that way.

The only way I remember "Ya talkin' to me" is because I had a clueless coworker who kept saying that all the time. You'd be in the middle of a conversation with him, he'd lose his place and just blurt that line out. We never knew if we were talking to Ted or to Travis Bickle. It was really rather funny.

TOD:   I'm sorry, folks, but my vote is for the entire "CELL PHONE" horror show.  Driving while yakking on the phone, walking down the street and talking like you've been out in the sun too long, walking down store aisles completely oblivious to everyone around you, talking while on an elevator while shooting evil glares at anyone who dares make a noise while you are talking....and TEXTING, too...IT ALL NEEDS TO GO AWAY!

TOD Redux:   I'd totally endorse a telephone cell inside automobiles allowing you to park and talk or drive and talk without holding onto anything.

She's so cute!!  And that's a lovely outfit, too!

TOD: Texting. It has not only helped erode grammar and spelling, but it seems to be the cause of an increasing number of accidents.

Ditto and ditto!! :P

I finessed, I printed, I Xeroxed, I delivered pages to Muse Margaret, I had an early lunch that was really breakfast, and I'm writing away.  My plan is to write at least six pages right now, maybe eight, then take a break, hopefully pick up some packages, watch the next couple of The Killing III episodes, then write another four or five pages after that.

It truly baffles me how anyone could not have seen Chinatown by now, at least anyone who considers themselves a movie buff or even anyone who loves movies.  It's timeless, it's brilliant, and should be seen by everyone.  For those here who haven't, you really must correct that mistake and believe me, it's a huge mistake.

My reasons for not having yet seen CHINATOWN are that the 70s use to be my least favorite decade for films, and because this particular film stars people I have never liked much, so I never sought it out.

But now that the 80s are my least favorite decade for film, and the 70s are starting to feel nostalgic.....but, before I get to Chinatown I have a lot of Blaxploitation and "women in prison" movies from that era to watch first.  :)

And BK, I might add, that any film buff worth his socks should have, by now, watched MURDER IN THE BLUE ROOM (1944).

But maybe that is just me. ;)

Donnybrook! Revival Will Star James Barbour, Jenny Powers, Ted Koch, Kathy Fitzgerald

I wonder if this will get a new recording.

I doubt it since  it's at the Irish Rep; my adopted son Joshie is doing the orchestrations.
