so this morning I looked out the window and although there was a slight coating of snow on the cars and grass the roads looked clear so with a sigh of relief I kissed the Vixter goodbye and wished her well on her first day of school and continued to get ready for work

It's a little too late and I'm a little too tired to watch LILITH this evening, but I took a peek at it and it sure looks great.

I went to Walmart specifically to look for that, and there were plenty of copies. It's in a series of Mill Creek double-feature releases, five bucks per double feature. I wish there were more of those with films I'm interested in. The only other selection out of a dozen or so that I cared to try was a pair of spaghetti westerns, one starring Lee Van Cleef. At a glance, the transfers all look good.

Also purchased the Sam Peckinpah/Steve McQueen THE GETAWAY for six bucks. Interestingly, the disc menus are entirely in Japanese, as are most of the alternate audio tracks and subtitles. Looked on Amazon, and a bunch of people have reported the same thing, bought from any number of retail sources. An interesting error on Warner Bros.' or some distributor's part.

The Getaway has some period images of the San Antonio River Walk. Some of it is dated, but the restaurant you see in the background, Casa Rio, is still alive and serving.

Just finished the latest "Downton." Yes, the Bates story is dragging, but the downstairs intrigue is really picking up and promises to be juicy.

I've watched a few things this evening, but nothing in total. I saw the first twenty minutes of The Quiet Man - one was led to believe this transfer was the second coming and that it most assuredly is not. Those making the pronouncements are the usual dunderheads who are basing what they say on seeing a screen cap rather than the actual transfer in motion. It's real easy to pick one frame of a film that happens to look very pleasing, but that's just what it is - one FRAME. The film in motion is a miracle compared to all other home video releases, which were abysmal. That said, the contrast is too light and their are some registration problems. As Robert A. Harris states, it could have been much better, but it's still okay.

Then I watched the first forty minutes of The Seven Per-Cent Solution, an odd film, but it has its moments. I'll finish that one up tomorrow, then go back to The Quiet Man, and then move directly to the DVD of a French film from France entitled Beloved. Its director is obviously hugely influenced by Mr. Jacques Demy, so it's visually pleasing. I watched its first ten minutes.

Finally calling it a day. It was a great day. Highlight - having dinner and a cigar with an old pal - something we don't do enough of.
