UP-TO-THE-MINUTE
« on: July 21, 2004, 12:00:36 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, you've seen the notes' minutiae, you're up-to-the-minute on the notes and now it is time to post until the up-to-the-minute cows come home.

I have no questions and no answers. There's a nice symmetry to that. Good-night.

Yes the notes are au courant!  Rehearsal update brings us right up to the minute.

Posts yesterday....DRROBIN (?) I also enjoy CARNIVAL STORY....Miss Anne Bancroft is blonde and looks nothing like a high diver....but I like to imagine that she is really Eve Harrington and this is the kind of movie she left Broadway to star in.  A German version was shot at the same time with (I think) Curt Jergens and Hildegarde Knef - and they can be seen sitting at a table & dancing in the wedding scene.  I love the "danger" music - and MB favorite Mr Steve Cochran is menacing in the extreme!

Question for BK. Are you aware of the two compilation CDs available from Raven Rrcords in OZ  - one of Jimmy Webb songs and  the other of obscure songs and performances of Bacharach material. Do you have either or both - are they worth buying. Much cheaper for me to buy direct than through Amazon of course.

I'll have to check - definitely don't have the Webb, but have a ton of obscure Bacharach.

This question is particularly for DRs JRand53 and Charles Pogue. What are the sources of the quotations you use ("Harry, I saw a satellite"; and Frank Loesser's on "the heart ...")?

Ask me no, questions and I'll tell you no lies.

I listened to the wonderful Janis Siegel, Sketches of Broadway, yesterday. I'm making my Friday report early. So sue me (a Frank Loesser reference). Great stuff! Boy, is she hot.

Kerry, if you hop in and out of here, thanks for the little note :-)

Jason, hope your job travails are working out.

My question for Ask BK Day:

If you were in New York City for one night (say tonight), which one show would you want to see that's currently playing?

'Morning. an early post, then a quick walk, then work. Will post intermitently during the day, depending on how my Server is behaving. (Adelphia comes tomorrow to troubleshoot.)
I hate to be a copycat, but believe it or not, I was kept up all night by some creature on the roof or the attic area. (Not a total copycat because bk's squirrel only appears around 5-ish to wake him up, as I recall). I am now totally zonked, but must carry on, brave little soldier that I am.

I knew this was coming a few days after my birthday (what a great birthday present to myself!), but look at what we're getting for such a cheap price:

Streeting on September 7th is the classic Murder on the Orient Express, which has been newly remastered in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, and includes the new "Making Murder On The Orient Express" four-part documentary, the "Agatha Christie: A Portrait" featurette and the theatrical trailer. Retail will cost you a mere $14.95.

TomofOz and Jane, I enjoyed your discussion of Jimmie Rodgers! I am also a fan...great singer. Have either of you seen his film LITTLE SHEPHERD OF KINGDOM COME? I believe it is his only film role and he does a fantastic job in it! Two of my interviewees, Diana Darrin and Kenny Miller, are also in it and they had nothing but praise for Jimmie. I beliebe Kenny Miller is still in touch with him.

Wicked.  Yes, I know Chenoweth has left the building, but a well-written show should survive a change in actors.  And yes, I believe Wicked has a good score, not great but good, so part of the writing is there.  Plus the only "spectacular" shows I've seen have been in London or on the road, not on Broadway.  I'd like to see the Broadway people strut their stuff.

A question right back at the DRs:

What are your favorite songs about food?

One of my absolute favorite Manhattan Transfer songs isn't really about food, but the word "food" is in the title:  "Soul Food To Go."  It's funky, it's just a lot of fun! ;D The album Brasil won a Grammy for Best Pop Peformance by a Duo or Group with Vocal!

I'll have to think about songs that are actually about food.

"Hot Lunch Jam" from the movie FAME!

For my senior recital in college, I wanted to have a theme that was different than most others and I tried having food theme.  When it came to finding songs, it wasn't that hard, but finding scenes from plays with good cuts and that didn't require a ton of props was difficult, so I abandoned it.  But someday...

Well, Mr. BKs CDs do get around. I'm listening to a BBC Radio 2 program right now and Mr. David Jacobs is playing a cut from Drat the Cat with Mr. Jason Graae. You're a hit in London BK, even if you've never been there.

Another great Manhattan Transfer song that's almost about food but not quite is Java Jive. It's one of the first MT songs I heard and made me fall in love with their music and performances.

DR Ben was asking about The Gay Life, and Annie Warbucks. Both are reviewed on this very entertaining (see, e.g., Sail Away, Parade) site:

Good morning! Good yawning!

Yesterday I discovered Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream.

arghalaghraghalrgha

Today I plan on eating nothing but salad and other assorted "forget about the ice cream" foods.

My parents decided to go up to Quebec City for the day using their handy-dandy train passes and my grandmother just left for church and then lunch with her friends.  My sister is working at her wading pool.  So....

I AM ALONE AT HOME!!!! *DANCE DANCE DANCE*

Question for Ask BK Day: What is your favourite ice cream flavour?

Hmmmmm....food songs......

"Food Glorious Food," though not a favorite song, certainly fits the bill.
"A Little Priest," though not a food I would eat (no comments from the peanut gallery), also fits the bill.
"Ice Cream," though not about that treat directly, does impart the joy of the frozen confection.
And of course, my favorite from the land of chicken soup: "To Each His Consomme-ah"

But seriously folks.....

My question of the day, to BK and all other dear readers, is this:

I know that most of us feel that when one comes across a phrase or a word used in everyday conversation, it can trigger an association with a song, or even quotes from movies, etc.  (Peter Filichia talks about this sort of stuff all the time.)

Recently, I was flipping through a font catalogue, looking for interesting typefaces for my season brochure.  I came upon one that I have never liked (Brush Script), and I thought "No, that's the WHOREHOUSE logo font."  I came to another (I think it is Murray Hill) and thought "Nope.  A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC."  So my question is this:

Am I the only one that has strong associations between typefaces and show logos?

Food songs? Hmmm...will really have to think about that one! I am sure there must be some.

Well, right now I have no questions.  Maybe later.

I just finished watching the last film version of NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, and in some shots Dame Edna looks like Marian Seldes!  I enjoyed the movie a lot, which I thought was better than the same director's EMMA, which was  too pretty and a little coy for Jane Austen.  While I enjoyed it, I much prefer the A&E-BBC production with Kate Beckinsale.

Food songs:
Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy
Pie (Jerome Kern from "The Stepping Stones")
This Was a Real Nice Clambake
Ice Cream
A Little Priest
I Can Cook, Too
Chop Suey
Cause We Got Cake ("Too Many girls")
Remember that dreadful Gershwin song "Vodka" that Dorothy Loudon used to sing?  Does that count?
Cherry Pies Ought to Be You
Worst Pies in London
If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd Have Baked a Cake
Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries

I don't have such a conscious association, but now that you mention it I know I strongly associate Tenderloin's typeface with that show. Mame's, also.

Typeface and overall design do make a lasting impression. I think the ugliest album covers - including typography -  are for Henry, Sweet Henry; and Promises, Promises.

A Little Night Music's typeface captures the spirit of that show, but it isn't my favorite either.
