Speaking of eating...today, I went downtown to a local sandwich shop and met a couple of friends for lunch and visiting.  I had the club sandwich and it was huge!  It was three layers with ham, turkey, bacon and tomatoes, and a few other things that added up to one very large and delicious sandwich!  I only ate half of it!  I wish that I had taken a picture...it would've definitely been worth posting. :D

Anyway, I'm off now to my parents' for dinner, but I'm still not quite hungry from the lunch sandwich, which I'll bring, so I'll probably just have half of what's left when I get there and the rest a little later tonight.

Be back later!

Oh...I can't believe that I forgot that I also had a piece of cocoanut cream pie!  It was wonderful, too! ;D

Friday morning greetings.  It's a sad morning in Middletown, because our friend Cathy lost her battle with cancer yesterday.  Her son John and our son Rob grew up together and remain such good friends that John was one of Rob's groomsmen.  RIP, Cathy...

I am so very sorry to hear this Ginny

Back!  And worn out.  Greatly enjoyed my drive through DC this morning, but with that and a few stops along the way, I didn't get home till 8:30 pm.   But what a great little getaway that was, and I say thanks again to BK and SB for a delightful evening.

I'm glad you were able to free yourself from the candy jar, Jane.

I wonder how many people will buy tickets for this show under false pretenses?

From DR TCB:
Quote
Jane are you familiar with a restaurant in town called Cucina Biazza (sp)?

Yes, why?

We haven't eaten there since Bryan moved from here to Portland which was a long, long time ago.

Yesterday at lunch, one of our group said that he and his wife were planning on spending a week this summer at the Shakespeare Festival.  Another member told him not to miss eating at Ashland's very best restaurant.  I didn't think i had ever heard you mention it.

Where is Keith when I need him.....my sleeve was caught in the candy jar and I was trapped for way too long.

I can think of worse places to have my hand trapped.

DR MBARNUM - have a fun weekend.

Perhaps someone in the DOLLY audience will recognize MR BK as the producer of the Hello, Dolly! Grammy-nominated revival CD.

Oh sure, even Carol didn't remember that.

Back from a deliciously delicious meal at McCormick's and Schmik.  I'd eaten at one of the LA ones and really hadn't liked it, but this branch was superb.  I had grilled salmon (blackened) and veggies in a lemon butter sauce and a shrimp cocktail to start.  Since this was the first meal of the day not bad calorie-wise.  I also ordered Lanny and I a side of creamed spinach.  I had only four bites of it but it was certainly amongst the best creamed spinach I've ever had.  Then I splurged, because after three weeks of being really good I figured I was allowed one splurge, so we ordered the chocolate bag for dessert.  Inside the "bag" was white chocolate mousse, and the "bag" itself was dark chocolate.  Also some berries.  Lanny had very little of the mousse itself and a lot of the bag.  I had a little of the bag and a healthy dose of the mousse and berries, but even between us we didn't finish and left quite a bit - so hopefully no real damage.

I am reading a very interesting book for review - it is titled TENDER COMRADES.  Interviews with those who were personally and professionally involved in the Blacklisting of the 1950's....

I didn't expect to like it - but there are a lot of interesting stories in there.....much better than a "history" of the times written by someone who just researches the facts.

That is similar to William Manchesters two-volume book THE GLORY AND THE DREAM: A Narrative History of America 1932 - 1972.  I expected to be bored to death with the books, but he managed to blend the historical events of the time, but also the movies, the styles, the fads, etc.  It was wonderful.

Can you get a really small one to cook with the spuds and carrots?

I think I will be lucky to find any of them available.

And then there was Hello, Dolly.  I'll talk more in the notes, but let me just say that in fifty-something years of theatergoing it was the single worst professional production of a classic musical comedy that I have ever seen.  I don't mind a director having a "concept" - in this case a stripped down Dolly with no sets that basically takes place in a train station with the luggage carts moving around to become tables and the hat store and like that.  In fact, without changing that part of it, I could stage a fun Dolly on that set - one that would use it cleverly and make it work.  If you like brown, this is the production for you.  Everything is brown - sets, costumes - it's like you're watching Hello, Dolly by Anton Chekov.  Everything is lifeless and dreary and there's simply no joy.  The director states he's trying to play the text, to get to the heart of Dolly, but he's doing the opposite - he simply does not have the tools to deliver.  And if you're going to forego Gower Champion's brilliant choreography, you'd better have something damn good to replace it.  Gower was one of the greats at dance as storytelling - here we get steps (not interesting steps) and that's it.  Twice the choreographer paid homage and gave us Gower moves and they were the only moves in the show that worked.  Funny that.  A cast of around seventeen including a six-person ensemble.  Not the Dolly I want.  The title song is performed by Dolly and four boys.  They do roll out a big carpet for her entrance - I thought, finally some red, but alas, it was beige.  The poor actors are left hung out to dry, especially the talented Nancy Opel, who is so much better than she's being allowed here.  Either her director encouraged a performance without energy (real) or her director didn't do what he needed to do to GET the energy.

TCB, that's a funny thought - but you know, there re actually enough guys in it that you could call "in really good shape"  - and all of them do actually have hands on them - that I guess if anyone tried to claim no literal truth in advertising, they'd have trouble making their case.

Seriously, an excellent show!  I'm surprised to see the ad breaks HARD BODY into two words, didn't noitice before that the logo did, that.

I am thinking of buying another corned beef this weekend, just so I can  cook up a whole bunch of potatoes and carrots.  The one I bought last weekend was more St. Fatty's Day, than St. Patty's Day.  But damn those spuds and carrots  were 2 die 4.

A flat cut is a little less fat than a point cut.  It should say which it is on the package.  I had a point cut, but went through every single one in the case to find the leanest.
