And here are the two new Kritzerland releases - they'll be live at six in the morning:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack CD release and our first ever Jerry Goldsmith score:

BREAKHEART PASS

Music Composed and Conducted by Jerry Goldsmith

Breakheart Pass, a wonderfully entertaining thrill ride in the old west featured a stellar cast, including Charles Bronson, Ben Johnson, Richard Crenna, and Jill Ireland, along with a terrific supporting cast that included Charles Durning, David Huddleston, Ed Lauter, Bill McKinney, Archie Moore, and Sally Kirkland.  The director was Tom Gries, the screenplay was by Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, When Eight Bells Toll, Puppet On a Chain, Force Ten from Navarone), and cameraman was the great Lucien Ballard.  What they all delivered was a terrific adventure yarn, one with rousing action sequences, and one that kept you guessing as to who was really who and who was doing what to whom.

But what becomes an action adventure movie most is its score, and Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Breakheart Pass is as good as it gets.  Goldsmith had worked with director Gries on 100 Rifles and the mini-series QB VII so they knew each other’s sensibilities well.  From the first guitar strums of the main title, Goldsmith’s score does what all great scores do – involves you instantly and sets you up for what’s to come.  His theme is addictive and propulsive – it literally makes you sit up and take notice.  From there he captures not only the rhythm of the train itself (which is a character in the film), but tender moments, moments of high suspense, character moments, and, of course, the adventure sequences, which no one did better than Goldsmith.

Breakheart Pass was previously released on CD by La La Land Records.  This release is essentially that album as mastered by James Nelson, with some notable exceptions: In the film, there is a wonderful action sequence towards the end on top of the train.  Goldsmith apparently didn’t score it, but Gries and his music editor thought music would help there and so two cues were edited together for that sequence (“Runaway” and “Box Car Fight”) and we’ve recreated that edit for this CD and put it in the proper sequence – it plays beautifully with it.  On the previous CD there were two bonus tracks – some guitar strums called “Four Styles” and a trumpet cavalry call.  We have left off the cavalry call since it has nothing to do with Jerry Goldsmith or his score.  The four guitar strums are not really germane to anything but we’ve kept them.  But the biggest difference is the inclusion of a cue that was missing from the previous release.  The hunt for that cue took weeks – pulling every tape MGM had and frustratingly not finding it anywhere.  Finally, we decided to pull the D/M/E tracks and that’s where we got it from – it’s a great cue (it’s actually the second half of the cue called “Here They Come”) and we’re thrilled to finally have it available, and in excellent sound to boot.  We include it in two forms – in the score program as a part two of “Here They Come.”  The “Here They Come” album cue was missing almost fifteen seconds of its electronics at the beginning, so as a bonus we give you the entire cue as it plays in the film, complete from the music track of the D/M/E.

Breakheart Pass is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the third week of May but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

And the second title is:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack CD release of a classic score to a classic film, complete for the first time on CD, and coupled with a world premiere release:

LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN

and

TAKE CARE OF MY LITTLE GIRL

Music Composed and Conducted by Alfred Newman

What becomes a psychopath most?  Well, in the case of Leave Her to Heaven (1945), it wasn’t moody black-and-white, it was ravishing Technicolor and the radiant Gene Tierney.  But can Technicolor and film noir walk hand in hand?  In Leave Her to Heaven the answer is a resounding yes.  Based on the successful novel by Ben Ames Williams, Twentieth Century-Fox gave Leave Her to Heaven the class treatment all the way down the line.  In addition to a wonderful behind-the-camera creative team, Fox assembled a perfect cast, which included Gene Tierney, Cornel Wilde, Jeanne Crain, Vincent Price, Darryl Hickman, and character actors Chill Wills, Ray Collins, Gene Lockhart, and Reed Hadley and you had the recipe for success.  And what a success it was – audiences flocked to the film and it was Fox’s highest grossing film of the 1940s.  The film received rave reviews for all concerned and, in addition to Gene Tierney’s Oscar nomination for Best Actress, received three other Oscar nominations: Best Art Direction – Interior Design - Color, Best Sound, Recording, and Best Cinematography – Color.  Leon Shamroy took home the prize for his stunning work on the film.

Over the years, Leave Her to Heaven’s reputation has only continued to grow.  Martin Scorsese has said it’s one of his all-time favorite movies.  Of course, what helps make Leave Her to Heaven the classic it is is yet another great score from Alfred Newman.  It’s short, but what’s there is choice Newman, beginning with the three ominous tympani hits leading into a classic Newman main title, and then his beautiful underscore at just the right moments.  Half of what great film scoring is about is where, when and how to use music and no one was better at understanding that than Alfred Newman.

The previous release of Leave Her to Heaven on FSM presented only about twelve minutes of the score – here we present it complete and in improved sound from first generation elements, with the exception of the cue “Danny,” which was taken from the only available source, which wasn’t quite of the quality of the rest.

Because of the brevity of Leave Her to Heaven, we’ve paired it with the never-before-released Newman score to the Fox film Take Care of My Little Girl.  While the two films couldn’t be further apart, they do share a few similarities – Jeanne Crain appears in both, and one source cue from Leave Her to Heaven ended up in Take Care of My Little Girl and we present that cue as the bridge between both scores.  The 1952 Technicolor film was directed by Jean Negulesco, with a screenplay by Julius J. Epstein and Philip G. Epstein (from the novel by Peggy Goodin), and starred Jeanne Crain, Dale Robertson, Mitzi Gaynor, Jean Peters, and Jeffrey Hunter.

We’re thrilled to present the first ever complete release of Leave Her to Heaven alongside a new-to-CD Newman score – another Newman treasure unearthed.

Leave Her to Heaven/Take Care of My Little Girl is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the third week of May but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com

More Alfred Newman - excellent. I've never seen "Take Care of my Little Girl" so it will be great to hear some entirely new Newman!

Time and stress finally got to me.

Said the words i did not want to say to the boyfriend about the lack of respect shown to him by his kids.
That i was done trying to befriend them.  So we'll see what happens.

I am calm this morning, maybe it was time and this will turn out to be a good thing.

Maybe, seeing him fewer hours on the weekend gives me time to get my stuff done.   During the week he is gone till July.

YARD WORK AND DUSTING.

Good morning, all! I slept well, I think, but I remember that it was a night of much tossing and turning. I awoke to find pillows all over the floor, and I do not know in my last dream if I were watching a soap opera or I were in the soap opera; all I remember of it now is some nonsense about a telephone call by a woman whose drinking had resulted in a child's death trying to seduce the father of the victim. I am very glad to be awake!

A day at Toyland; I must finish proofing the Act Two orchestra parts and turn over the vocal score to my colleague Curtis for revisions before we print. I have to ponder the questions about Jerome Moross I just received for my radio interview tomorrow afternoon.

DR ChasSmith, I really like tacos.

That's my day! More coffee!

I'm scheduled for jury duty today, and the automated phone system is not recognizing my juror number, so I'll have to wait and talk to areal person before I know whether or not I have to go down there.  I don't mind doing it, but today isn't the most convenient day to be missing work. Ah well....

John G - Ah, but in the 2010's world where the point is make them talk about you and just get your moments of fame :)

isn't it intriguing that it's the sinbgle stand-out person(s) who did the less-good-than-others jobs that gets written about and singled out both in your write-up and in vixmom's write-up of the show she saw?

Hmmm., do we remember William Hung more than say Jessica Sanchez from American Idol?

Good morning, all.

You're right, FJL. I wrote Saturday after the show about the good songs sung, not the performers. So, I'll correct that by mentioning the one-named Isidro, who sang both "Beautiful City" and "Anthem." He didn't even break a sweat during either song and managed to find the emotional core of each without milking it. That's hard to do with "Anthem," which keeps building and building on its own. He's playing Thenadier in an upcoming local production of "Les Miz," and he made me want to see it.

I enjoyed THE HERBAL BED very much.  Everyone pronounced herb with the "H" sound in it, so that must be the British way of things.

Need to get some banking and shopping done before another event this morning.  I shall return.

I've been emailing back and forth with the radio producer who's interviewing me tomorrow. He sent me a list of questions about Jerome Moross, and I had to go through it and tell him the items where I was completely clueless. After I'd vetoed every one of the topics (his work method with John Latouce is one example),  I asked him why he and Susanna Moross wanted me in this documentary! I was perfectly happy if they'd replied with a thanks, but no thanks, but we've resolved the topics I'm happy to discuss somewhat intelligently:
  1. THE GOLDEN APPLE and mythology, cast, themes
  2. SORRY WRONG NUMBER, BALLET BALLADS and GENTLEMEN BE SEATED
  3. Moross as an orchestrator and film composer
  4. Moross and Americana

After hearing myself lisp through the EILEEN interview, I cannot say I'm looking forward to this!
