Public domain films: When films passed whatever the amount of years of copyright protection they had, they went into the public domain unless the copyright was extended. So, that's why there have been multiple DVDs and tapes of certain silent films, etc. Then there are the cases where the studios have screwed up and not put a copyright notice anywhere in the body of their film, i.e. Charade, Till the Clouds Roll By, etc. and those films are in the Public Domain as well. Where certain films have been able to be protected, ironically, is their music - although I don't believe any publishers have gone after these PD companies, on Till the Clouds Roll By they conceivably could because the composers music is protected and is under copyright.

When I babysat for crabby kids a zillion years ago, I'd get a friend to phone me. I'd tell the kids it was their mother/father, who said to cool it. This usually worked. On the other hand, two crabby brothers once reacted to this tactic by locking themselves in the bathroom (this was an apt. building, fifth floor) and threatening to jump out the window.

DVD Player:

Der Brucer and I watched Hellboy earlier this week. Ron Perlman is clearly this generation's Lon Chaney, Jr., with his ability to act under a ton of prosthetics.

At the same time that we picked up Hellboy, we also picked up Starman, Cat Ballou, and The Tailor of Panama, all at a good discount price. But last night I wasn't in the mood for any of them.

I slipped Fantasia 2000 into the player, instead. I happen to like the film, and it's a good relaxation/decompression flick, to boot, and to flash back to an earlier TOD.

At some point, we've got to get me a new discman, so I can play music in my room without having to blast it through the entire house. (That's what headphones are for.) And getting one that has an adaptor we can plug into the car stereo would be nice, too.

Well, I finally lost my patience, threw both kids in the car, an went for a drive. Didn't take more than 10 minutes for the 2 year old to fall asleep, just as I suspected. Now he's asleep on the couch and Riley is playing quietly for the time being. He knows he will be in major trouble if he decides to wake Quinn up...but that usually doesn't stop him...

A lull.

In my DVD player at home: nothing...yet. I have a stack, but I don't remember what all is in it.

In my CD player at home: nothing.

In my CD player at work: the original cast recording (produced by our very own BK): The Irish...and how they got that way.

In my VCR: a tape to tape tonight's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." I've taped all this week (special DNC coverage) and my parents want to watch it.

That's it so far.

Good Afternoon!

-I, too, was a bit zonked after last night's rehearsal. It was just a long day for me. I headed out shortly after 9:00am to head back to the rehearsal studio to fetch my phone - which was, as I thought, sitting "in" the piano (I had closed the fall board/keyboard cover before removing my phone - out of sight, out of mind). Then it was a short bus ride over to Highland and Santa Monica, and then a short few blocks walk to the Hudson. I hung out while the piano tuner finished his tuning. -And it's more like a mini-baby-brand piano size-wise, but it works nicely in the space and for the show. Then I headed out and decided to explore and get some lunch.

I headed over to La Brea, and checked out the relatively new Target store there. Very nice. Actually, the whole complex, The West Hollywood Gateway, is very nice - a Best Buy, some restaurants, a Ben & Jerry's (yes, I had ice cream - and the scooper had to be one of the friendliest scoopers I've ever had), etc. However, it was weird walking just a few feet past the complex down La Brea and seeing all the "industry" back there. While at Target, I decided to "splurge" on a new portable CD player - $12.99!!! I had forgotten to pack mine for the trip out here, and I figured for $12.99, what the hell? I also needed a new portable cassette recorder. That piece of equipment, however, was $25.00. It's just strange how the "old" technology was priced higher than the "new".

Then it was back to theatre to get some practicing in on the new-to-me piano. It feels good, and I can get some nice "colors" out of it.

The rehearsal went well. It was a "typical" first night in the theatre rehearsal. Just lots of new "stuff" to deal with - and still some old stuff to work through.

Once I got back to the apartment, I decompressed with "The Daily Show", and then headed to bed... And slept... and slept.

Just finished watching ICE STATION ZEBRA!!

Radiator covers, temporary splints, ice cream scoopers, screaming babies...what interesting lives we all lead!

RE:Talent Competition. Sad, but don't try to email the MAO (that's the Miss America Organization to us civilians) they have NO sense of humor about their organization...and it is NOT a beauty pageant, it is the largest women's scholarship organization in the WORLD!!! If not for MAO there would be NO educated women in the United States of America!

Much enjoyed MYSTIC RIVER despite its achingly downbeat slice of humanity on view. I thought all of the performances were wonderful, but my favorite performance was by Marcia Gay Harden.

On to "Devil's Foot" later today. After that, probably THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES.
