I have lately been smelling cigarette smoke in my condo, primarily in the entrance and half bath just off it.

I learned last week that another neighbor has pitched a fit because of cigarette smoke getting into his apartment from the unit under his and wanted to have the HOA tell the neighbor to quit smoking.

The neighbor under me smokes, too, apparently, but I'm not clear on why the smoke is entering my unit just at my entrance and half-bath. His unit is identical to mine, and I'm sure he doesn't just smoke there in that entrance. It could be where it all gathers, however.

I use air freshener. I'm no one to demand anyone stop smoking in his own home.

She has a fire every day and every night because she is used to living in an apartment where she couldn't do that and now she has a house and loves having fires. She admitted that she has been excessive about it and can easily back off. Right now I'm going to wait and see. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt for awhile

JRand, I didn't tell her what I do for a living. The interpreter at my former office lives sort of across the street from her, and I think her husband was outside, so maybe someone told her

Do you have a neighborhood association? Or, are there zoning laws that affect such things? While it may be legally permissible to have a fire in a fire pit, there must also be exceptions to the permission when the smoke from the fires adversely affect the neighbors.

I really have no interest in the Big Parade or Mardi Gras celebration. Paul wants me to paint the water tower with him for tomorrow, but if I'm going to paint and work like that, I think I'll work on the room that never seems to get done. I picked a color, really neutral, but I haven't finished stripping wallpaper and scrubbing. I'm thinking that I'll do that the next couple days and pick up the paint. I want to finish this room this month.

The rules are, you have to have a certain size pit with a screen on the top and you can't burn when the wind is over 15 miles per hour. I was talking to the fire department when she came over, so I didn't get all my questions answered. I told them I'd call back if I needed to. We're not in an association. Just a nice old neighborhood

You also can only burn certain kinds of wood, which I'm not sure she's doing. I'm pretty confident she'll follow through. I was less sure until we talked about mowing, her entire attitude changed in one second

When I was growing up we just went to Culver City, hometown of DR Jeanne, for fireworks. It was rather silly that they were legal down the road and not where we lived.

Good, especially the part where she knows it wasn't you that turned her in. That was rather petty without first requesting she mow it.

Like a mini bonfire in a pit? It seems like it would be rather large to keep blowing smoke into your house.

We had a major problem with a neighbor until Keith helped them out during a flood on their part of the road, after I told Keith what was going on.
