I'm so annoyed with myself right now it's not even funny. An AT&T sales rep came to the door - they're done installing their fibre optic stuff in the nabe and are pitching UVerse to everyone. As you know I've been very unhappy with Time Warner and have threatened several times to go this other route, so I listened and since they come and install for free and give you a test period to see how much better their service is, I said okay. And then came the stupid part. He said they just needed my social or driver's license number to do a soft credit check - I'm normally not so stupid but he was very good - I'd already given him my phone numbers, he had the address, and I'd given him my name for the appointment set-up. He did give me his cell, which I haven't tried yet but will tomorrow. And then, stupidly, I gave him my license number and date of birth - I'm usually not this damn STUPID. So, I went online and began reading about AT&T which I searched with "scam" and "getting credit information." And while I did find similar concerns on a few boards no one actually said they'd had anything compromised, although I'm not sure they actually had given their info. Of course AT&T was gone when I called. So, figuring he was still working the street, I went outside and found him two doors north of me talking to the homeowner there. I made him give me the order sheet that he'd written my number on (no carbon that I could see), which he did. I told him I'd check it all out and call him to come back if it was all okay. Of course, he could have already transmitted my information elsewhere via his cell phone. I'm now petrified that something no good will come of this. Obviously they don't know where I bank and don't know my credit cards, but they could create accounts in my name and/or checking accounts in my name. They don't have my social security number so I'm not sure how any of that would work, and they certainly can't get the social by having my license number. And my billing address for just about everything isn't the home address, so they don't have that either. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
