Last night, a couple of friends and I went to see Secondhand Lions in Seattle.  It's very much a "feel good" musical.  The music is energetic and could certainly manipulate your emotions (in a good way).  The lyrics were well written, if not profound (which is not necessarily a bad thing).  The only comment (and it's not a criticism) is that there are a lot of them...I mean, they have songs that just go on and on and are sung very quickly.  I assumed that it was so that a lot of (necessary) information could be given to the audience more quickly, but I never felt that they "overstayed their welcome."

The performers were all very good!  Mark Jacoby and Gregg Edelman were the two uncles.  Walt (the kid), played by Johnny Rabe, had also played Ralphie in the Broadway run of A Christmas Story, which also started at The 5th Avenue.  The two guys playing the uncles as young men were quite good, too.  Kevin Earley played the younger version of Mark Jacoby's character, but I don't know who played the younger Gregg Edelman.  I don't have my program with me and the cast list is not on 5th Avenue's website.  Jenny Powers as the princess (I forget her character's name...it's different that what's used in the movie) and Kendra Kassebaum as Walt's mother were well cast.  I read the synopsis of the movie and it seemed like she was supposed to be manipulating the kid from the beginning.  I didn't get that sense in the musical, at all.  It really did seem like she was genuinely just leaving Walt with the uncles so that she could go to business school (or whatever kind of school it was).  She did tell Walt to look for the money, but to me, that seemed more like an afterthought, not a real plot device.  But it was a minor detraction (and only after reading the movie synopsis).

Otherwise, a very good time was had by all. :D

Mark Jacoby is an old friend from the early 1980s, and he's really a fine actor. I interviewed Kevin Earley about the male lead in ROBERTA, but he was tied up with another commitment.

Awhile back I believe DR Jennifer suggested Keith get a library card.  I think it is time to do so.  The book I need to read for my November book group is only available with a Kindle so I would be downloading it to his iPad anyway.  Frustrating is until I put a hold on the book I don't know how many people are in the queue and I don't have anymore room on my hold list.

DR George do you know how many holds your library permits for eBooks?  Six just seems too few in my opinion, especially when the books take so darn long to become available.

Here in San Antonio, we're allowed up to 25 reservations and the number can get as high as the demand allows. I've sometimes had to wait through hundreds of reservations before getting a DVD or an e-book.

25-wow!  I've had a few with that had high numbers but I don't recall any as high as 200, close but not all the way there.  I'm still working my way down the queue for a few of those books.  It seems as if they have been on my hold list forever-lol

Fortunately I can put as many on my wish list as I want.  I check my wish list almost every day for available books.  In fact, I just downloaded a book that had become available only to discover it is only available for the Kindle.  I'll have to put it on Keith's iPad.

Each patron is allowed up to eight holds, but there isn't a limit to the number of holds that a title may accrue.  The other factor is that each patron can determine his or her check-out period:  7 days, 14, days or 21 days.  I chose 7 days because I don't keep my Wi-Fi turned on, so even though the next patron can get the title after my 7 days are up, the books don't automatically delete from my Kindle when the 7 days are up.  I can continue to download additional titles through my computer and keep them...practically forever. :D

I would be happy with 10 holds.  It would be easier to keep a couple available to add books I need for my book group that I can't wait for.

I don't understand why Kindle books don't have a return to the library option that Nook books have.  Had I realized I was downloading a Kindle book I would have reduced the number of days from 21 to 7.

I'm not a fan of the songwriters for the show dear reader George saw last night, nor does the idea of a musical of that film appeal to me much.  I'm sure Rupert's work is, as always, exemplary.

Okay, apparently our web host is moving everything to a new data center today - this will take approximately thirty minutes and you won't even notice it, BUT - best not to post from four to four-thirty while they're doing it or you run the risk of the post disappearing.  So, for that thirty minutes take a break and then come back and we'll partay.

AND THE QUOTE OF THE DAY IS:

May your hands always be busy.
May your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation.
When the winds of changes shift.
May your hear always be joyful.
May your song always be sung.
May you stay forever young.

Actually, this is a song written by The Great song writer Bob Dylan.
On the other hand, I think his words are sheer poetry, so I guess it really is a poem

I was wondering what you would think about the show.  The songs weren't especially memorable, either.  Good, but similar to other songs/scores.

Also, there were a few whoops from the audience, especially when Walt held out a big, long note at the end of his first big solo.  He did well, but the screams from the audience were unnecessary.  (I think that they were probably family members...they were male voices.)

While it was obvious in the movie that the mother was greedy, I never got the sense the kid allowed himself to be manipulated by her.  He was far more in awe of his uncles and their lifestyle and the stories they would tell.

We're all moved and fine.  There was a brief hiccup just a couple of minutes ago, but I'm here and I'm posting and we seem to be back, but please let's have some other postings so I know for sure.  Because in an hour the IT guys won't be there to fix any problems.
