Saturday morning greetings!  Both football teams I follow are off this week, so my Saturday is free for some AAUW work and some shopping.  First up, take some donations over to the AAUW Holiday Bazaar venue.  The event isn't until November 8 & 9, but Rose wants to get started on sorting and pricing.

BearManor Media is running a special on my two Hollywood memoirs, MY FORTY-FIVE YEARS IN HOLLYWOOD...AND HOW I ESCAPED ALIVE and the just published LIFE, LIBERTY & THE PURSUIT OF HOLLYWOOD. I know that many people on this board have read MY FORTY-FIVE YEARS, but you haven't read the first book, this is a pretty good bargain.

TOD:

MURDER, MY SWEET started the trend of film noir.

THE MALTESE FALCON is also noir and it came several years earlier, but it did not start the trend.

BK,

Your PSYCHO references brought back memories.  I recall seeing the film for the first time at the Paramount Theater in Seattle.  During several scenes, my date dug her fingernails into my arm.

I used PSYCHO as an example of three-act structure in my writing class last weekend.  Interestingly, one could remove all of Janet Leigh's scenes from the picture;  begin it with Vera Miles' search for her sister...and you would still have a viable picture.

Yes, you would have to add a few scenes to the 2nd and 3rd acts, but it would still work, because the basic plot is the search to find Janet Leigh and the stolen money.  Janet's scenes are, essentially, prologue to this.

Don't misunderstand.   I am not suggesting that anybody tamper with this classic.  But, from a strictly structural standpoint, that's how the story breaks down.

DR elmore3003, glad that today's trip to the pharmacy went so much better than yesterday - though it is really a crime that they made you make the second trip at all.

Sounds like you are learning some patience. I am sure it isn't easy, but in the long run it will serve you much better.

Car insurance cost increases in the UK have become ridiculous. Renewals keep going up because so many people are making phoney whiplash claims, through encouragement of ambulance-chasing lawers. Received my vehicle insurance renewal notice today which is ridiculously 25% higher than last year so I will be looking for alternative quotes. Same think happened last year and the year before that. It's got so that I have the hassle of changing insurance companies each year.

I saw a reissue of PSYCHO when I was 18 and found it terrifying. I was with my older sister who, having seen it previously when first released a few years earlier, had to walk out for a few minutes during the shower scene - she couldn't bear seeing it again!

I teach "storytelling".

Back from delivering my and Mom's donations to this year's AAUW Middletown Holiday Bazaar venue.

In the absence of Michigan football today, I was glad to find this video in my Facebook News Feed:

Michigan Marching Band Drumline

The mellifluous voice doing the narration belongs to Carl Grapentine, a classmate of mine who has been the band announcer for many years and is now also the play-by-play announcer at Michigan Stadium.

Go, Blue!

Where is everyone? It's a nice day in Manhattan, bu I'm stuck indoors reading my mystery.

I may listen to some Gilbert & Sullivan later. I've dragged out several scores, Trial by Jury, HMS Pinafore, The Gondoliers, and The Yeoman of the Guard.
