Happy B-Day to John G.!

Get well vibes all around.

Today was Movie Day here at Chez Raianiemi.  We DVR'ed Un Chien Andalou and World Without End off of TCM.

Michael had never seen either of them.  He was rather stunned when the most notorious scene came up, to say the least.  I took a little pleasure in seeing him jump.  I've seen this short film many times over the years, and I refuse to analyze a frame of it.  It is what it is.  And you are what you is, according to Frank Zappa.

I'd never seen World Without End.  I love 1950's sci-fi.  It's probably my favorite flavor of celluloid.  But I gotta tell you, while World Without End starts well enough, it quickly descends into boredom.  The sets look not unlike the ones they used on the original Star Trek, with all the low-budget cheesiness, but not a whit of Trek's charm.  Huge disappointment for me.

Next up was the Twilight time blue ray deeveedee of The Fury.  Liked it a lot, actually.  I don't think I'd ever seen the film before, but it worked for me.  John Williams was obviously told by de Palma to sound as much like Bernard Herrmann as he could.  Nice score, nifty movie.

Finally was the blue ray deeveedee of The Hudsucker Proxy, a film by the Coen Brothers.  Personally, I loved this movie since I saw it in the theater.  It seemed to have been made for my own personal enjoyment, since no one else I know has confessed their love for this picture.  (But hey, I loved John Carter, so what the hell do I know?)

I just slapped Rising Sun onto my iPod Nano.  That should make walking to church tomorrow a noir-ish experience.

Oh, and totally by co-inkie-dink, Charles Durning shows up in both The Fury and The Hudsucker Proxy.  Maybe tomorrow we should play Tootsie and The Sting, to keep the Durning-ness of it all going.

DR Druxy,

Could you explain your method of teaching "storytelling"?

In 10 words or less?

Got a lot done today! I finally found a source for the pre-mixed Margaritas that I love - very hard to find; I sorted out some technology needs and purchases, including pre-ordering my next smartphone; I bought a new suit which will be ready the day before I fly for an out-of-town wedding in two weeks; I got an insurance application completed and submitted; I learned some music; got some work done; and caught up on my E-mail. AND I took a lovely mid-afternoon nap!

I can get all kinds of margarita mixes, Slumdog, but I have a question. Why would you want them? Here's the recipe for the original margarita and it's still the best:

1 part tequila
1 part triple sec or orange liqueur
1 part freshly squeezed lime juice

Shake with ice. Pour into a margarita glass rimmed with extra salt (the extra salt is my choice). Squeeze a slice of orange or tangelo over the top. Garnish with lime and orange slice.

I just watched a terrible movie, THE LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE with Kim Novak and Peter Finch.

The sad thing is that if director Robert Aldrich and his screenwriter had been able to decide on what movie they wanted to make, it could have been pretty good.  All the elements were there for a good mystery/thriller.

Tonight is Joshua Bell with the Sioux City Symphony.   We have an excellent Symphony and I'm really looking forward to the concert tonight. I'll go early for the pre-concert talk by our conductor, then will sit back an enjoy the show.
He was great.  I loved it.  The symphony was wonderful as well
He's wonderful in concert. Saw him twice when he was a child prodigy and what I've heard since then has just impressed me more. Glad he wasn't a flash in the pan.

I am just back from Loew's Jersey (in Jersey City), a 1929 movie palace.  Following years of conflicts whenever they happened to be showing something (sadly, that isn't too often), I have finally been able to get my arse to it.  Oh my god, if only this place could be completely restored.  They saved it from the wrecking ball in 1986 and undid some serious damage (I think it had been split into two screens), and there's much more work to be done.  But its opulence is still palpable.  If the camera gods were good to me, I got some pictures that won't be too shaky for low-light shooting, and I'll post a few tomorrow.

The movies were DUEL (gripping, as always, and wonderful seen "theatrically") and BULLITT.  All 35mm, and unfortunately the projection here is hit and miss.  Nevertheless, it was a fine evening of movie watching.

Something about the layout or the general feel of this place made me think most of the Hollywood Pacific, which I believe BK and others would have known as the Warner Cinerama.

DR TCB, I wish you a great time tonight, and I know your comments will be choice, charming, pointed, and very funny.

DITTO.  But I think we'd all like to look forward to some Aural Evidence.  You must post a recording of your remarks!

Sorry, no such evidence exists.  However, two of DR George's friends were in attendance tonight, so maybe George can check with them.

And I am home from the pharmacy with my novel. The trip was mostly easy, except once again, after standing at the pharmacy counter, my left leg decided it didn't want to support me any longer. So, I tool my time getting to the bus stop where I could sit, rest, and read.

Sounds like the best plan.  Just take your time, sit and rest when you need to.  You may get to see something amusing, interesting or beautiful while you are waiting to get on you feet and move on

Wonderful advise, Cilla.

Today was Day One of what they are predicting as the Weather Weekend from Hell.  This was supposed to be the weaker of the two storms.  If this was weaker, tomorrow afternoon and evening should be pretty bad.

I received a lot of really wonderful comments about my little talk.  This one woman came up to me and said that she and her husband had been coming to TLT.  She said they always checked to see if I was going to be in the production, because if I was; they knew that it was going to be good.
