Last weekend, for my birthday breakfast, I had real barbacoa, made from meat scraped from the cow's skull. Had cheek, sweetbreads from near the tongue and an eye.

If any of you remember the scene in Giant where they dig up the cooked cow's head, prompting Elizabeth Taylor's Leslie to faint in disgust, well, that was pretty much the situation, only we didn't see the skull. Just the meat.

I don't think it is  right to be forced to eat dead  cow head on your birthday

I wasn't forced. I enjoyed it. For the most part.

Started watching a Don Ameche-Alice Faye flick called "Hollywood Cavalcade." It's not very good, but it is a fictional story of Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand. This is the way that they should treat the rewrite of "Mack and Mabel" since the real story is too depressing for audiences.

DVR'd a fun "educational" film off of TCM the other night. It was titled THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY, but should have been titled THE S & H GREEN STAMP STORY.

The plot was about a young couple (Craig Hill and Gloria Talbott) who are to engaged, only the young man doesn't want to get married until his career is set. Then he discovers that his to-be bride uses S and H Green Stamps, and Leon Erroll takes them on a tour of an S and H Green Stamps store and warehouse. All in glorious Technicolor. And With Mae Clarke as the young man's mom.

It was fun and brought back a lot of memories of those stamp books and going to the store to redeem them.

We couldn't redeem them for gifts in Washington, we could only get two dollars cash for each book.

Finished with my viewing.  One cast member I wanted for this upcoming quick show can't do it - Jenna Rosen.  Too much creepy school.  She goes to an arts high school that's supposed to be understanding about kids getting gigs, but they aren't.  So, I'm on the prowl for a young person who can belt like she does, tap like she does, etc.  I'm determined to have someone of that age in the show because I don't think that's ever been done in a revue.

Pimiento loaf, with olive, was also a fixture in our refrigerator when I was growing up, along with pimiento cheese.  This was the stuff of "lunch" in the summer, especially.  Along with tomato sandwiches.  In the fall, for some reason, it was banana and peanut butter sandwiches for lunch (on Saturdays). 

To my knowledge, Oscar-Mayer has never packaged banana-peanut butter loaf.

Oh, yes, I did eat breakfast with Aman. I had a mushroom omlette with hash browns, toast and coffee.

Aman and his cousin, Davinder, only had coffee as they had already eaten shortly after leaving Seattle.

And Davinder paid for me breakfast, which I didn't realize until I tried to pay my bill. I thought that was awfully nice of him.

I was not feeling good that morning, and look horrid in that picture. But it would be hard to look good next to Aman! He is quite the handsome Punjabi, and very nice, too.

Don't put yourself down, Mikey.  I see two very handsome men in the photo.

Good morning, all!

Last night  got one of those lovely shocks when I signed onto my Facebook page to find myself tagged in a clip of Pamela Myers and I singing "Color and Light" from "Sunday in the Park with George", at an invited dress rehearsal for the 1986 L.A. Premiere. It had been posted by our wonderful director, Fran Soeder. It seems Fran had a little hand held camera in that monstrous cavern of a theater, and has had these things stashed away ever since. Never knew about that, only about an audio recording from someone's lap during the show. It looks like he is now transferring and making clips for postings of our show and others he directed out here.

It was amazing to see, and even though the quality isn't the best, it's something I'd love to have a copy of. I tried downloading it, but it wasn't possible. I'll have to ask him for a copy.  Talk about a blast from way in the past. But that show remains a highlight in my crazy career.

That was from a concert that Jason Robert Brown did with his wife, Georgia Stitt (also a composer, if you don't know her). It was their first joint concert, and aside from singing with the 30 person choir, my buddy Will Collyer (who was in this week's Kritzerland show) and I got to solo on The Old Red Hills of Home from PARADE.

Will and I had both both understudies on the production of PARADE done at the Taper in 2009, with Jason and Alfred Uhry, and with Rob Ashford directing. It was the Donmar Warehouse production, with a cast of 15, instead of 36.

What is it like to have the composer playing for you?  I always hated it when I knew the playwright was in the house.
