Merrily is, for me, a show with a good score.  I've seen several productions, and despite the talent involved the show, for me, never works.  I think Sondheim lovers want it to work so bad that every time there's a new go at it they say "THIS is the one that works!"  Until the next one, then they say, THIS is the one that works!  But, as many have pointed out, the majority of the show is extremely negative, never more so than act one, which is, of course, the end rather than the beginning.

That's why the original production and last night's both offered the promise that change was possible in Franklin Shepard, that he might have finally realized who his real friends were and what value that has in life.

I don't think the filmed version will change too many minds. But I will likely buy the DVD when it comes out.

Actually what was surprising to me was news that there's a video version of a British Into the Woods production that will also be shown in the theaters in the future. It looked dreadful, IMO, but it seems oddly timed with the movie version. I wouldn't think the studios would want another version so close to their own.

Going to see "Rocky Horror" live for the first time tonight. Should be fun. The leads are played by folks who'd been on RuPaul Drag Race.

DR John G. - re: the Into the Woods production - I don't know about a theatrical release, but this has been available for purchase/streaming for several years. From the same company that presented Merrily last night. They also offer Shakespeare and many straight plays from the UK, and lately some opera productions from Covent Garden, as well.

I purchased and downloaded that production of Into the Woods and I like it very much.  Jenna Russell plays the Baker's Wife in that.

I think the first act has a lot of funny things about it, but I think the second act is mean and nasty: killing the baker's wife right after she encounters the Prince is one example, killing Jack's mother is another. "No one is Alone" seems false coming from a writer who'd spent a lot of time  in other shows until then reminding us we're born alone and we die alone. The play is essentially about getting what we think we want and then finding it isn't, but THE FANTASTICKS says it so economically and simply. If the first act hinges on the witch getting her beauty back and using her powers, then what the hell is happening in that dreadful "Last Midnight" number?  And, I don't think the score is very good; it's a dip in quality between SUNDAY IN THE PARK and ASSASSINS.

Back from a major shopping trip with my mother, during which I came closer to losing my temper with her than ever before.  The next time I have a trip planned, she won't know about it until right before we leave.

DR JOHN G I hope the director of your production of RHS is not like the director of the production I saw earlier this month.....most irritating....and re-THOUGHT to the point of destruction of what is essentially a very funny and revolutionary musical.....
