Apple just told me that the ipad was the most wished for gift this Christmas.  That must come as a surprise to all those who wished for world peas.

I thought that was supposed to be whirled peas.

For all the Sondheim fans out there, a lengthy piece from Frank Rich in anticipation of his documentary, Six by Sondheim:

http://nymag.com/news/frank-rich/stephen-sondheim-2013-12/

Thanks for sharing, John.  Does anyone know if the documentary will be released on DVD/Blu-ray?

Agh!!! Not Rob Ashford!!!! In "So Long, Farewell," the Von Trapp kids will be standing with their bodies facing right, while their heads face the audience and they'll slouch in faux Fosse poses and slink sideways. It's the only step he knows. He did it in "Promises," he did it in "How to Succeed." He must be stopped.

Watching the "making of" special last week, I was thinking that some of the dance moves in the party scene were NOT in the right style at all.  They had lifts that even I know would never have been done at that time and by "normal" people (meaning not professional dancers).  Even in a rehearsal, it took me out of the moment. :-\

DR George. i saw the original national tour of SOM in 1962. The waltz in the party scene, which has Ashford's swirls and lifts, was a throwaway in the original. Completely unmemorable, although the music, based on "How Can Love Survive" a la the fantastic  Trude Rittman, was quite lovely. The important dance was the Ländler for the Captain and Maria.

When I heard Ashford was directing, I thought, this could either be good or as bad as watching a major train wreck, but either way, it's going to be fascinating and a must-see!

I wondered about that song substitution - thoughts?

Last night I began reading "In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods ".  Based on the title I expected to be quickly drawn into the book, and for the first few paragraphs I was.  Then something happened that was too yucky for me and I decided to read "Evening Class" by Maeve Binchy instead.

Returning to reviews of the first book I saw one reference to what I couldn't let go of but no comments that anyone was as bothered by it as I am.

Some think it's better than the original song.  I never liked the original much, but it's hard to write a romantic duet for a couple whose romance is so low-keyed and secondary. The Captain and Maria could never sing "Tonight" or "If I Loved You."

I once heard a minister preach against the song "Something Good" because it excluded the notion of grace and favored good works instead. I don't think I went back to that church. May have been the Methodist church in Middletown when I lived there.

So it wasn't DR JANE....well...maybe I dreamed it.

I agree with DR GEORGE that the lifts and dancing at the party is certainly unnecessary....

I am hoping they go with commercials during the scene breaks...but we shall see.  And the first couple of scenes with Maria and the nuns and the Mother Abbess go on FOREVER in the stage version....so I hope I can stick with it until she gets to the Von Trapp house.....and yes I know it's Audra MacWhatsherface....that is no inducement for me....more of a distraction.  Non-traditional casting gets into my hair.....what's next?  Unisex casting.....why can't a MAN play the Mother Abbess?

I don't really care that they are using Something Good instead of An Ordinary Couple....it's probably a better fit for the singers they have....  And I hope we get both of the Baroness and Max songs....they are both listed in the CD song list.....

My sister gave me the original "Sound of Music" album with Mary Martin.  Believe it or not it took me a few times before I truly appreciated it.  Prior to listening to my gift I had never heard of the play or known the story.

I am totally immune to the dubious charms of Ms McDonald, who's had a good career but who deification, like that of Ms Clark, completely eludes me.

I look forward to Laura Benanti, whose casting puts "No Way To Stop It" back into the range Richard Rodgers wanted.   Yhe last revival cast the wrong voice, but the director of that revival is a joke.

I've now listened to all of Act Two and there're some not-so-wonderful train wrecks to clear up and some glorious moments. Annalene's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is truly heartbreaking.

DR Jennifer while reading the 2nd Nadia Stafford book I was thinking you might like the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.  Have you read ONE FOR THE MONEY?
