I didn't see THE SOUND OF MUSIC.  Hell, it took me 15-20 years to see Julie Andrews in it.  I can't say it is must-see TV for me.  But I am amazed by the facebook furor over it.   I've seen things like "how dare she even try to emulate Julie Andrews" or "the film was perfect, this shouldn't have been done."  What a load of pretentious umbrage!  Films are remade; plays are re-staged all the time.  If someone thought a specific version of something was "perfect", then they shouldn't watch something that can only diminish their memory or enjoyment of that version.  And if one watched last night only to sneer or complain about it, what a paltry motive to watch anything and what a waste of their evening.

Well said, DR Pogue!

Alas, DR Jane - I did not take the photo, just swiped it off the Internet. So I do not know if the setting was Wisconsin or not.

When I step on it, my doctor's scale screams, "One at a time, please.  There's no value to me weighing two of you at once."

LOL!

Sounds like the ratings for Sound of Music were quite stellar, and with so little promotion.

You mean the only one plug per five minutes of air time, as opposed to a possible five?

Somehow I think the SOM commercials during Sunday Night Football were a bit of a waste.

I am curious why they did not want Broadway actors to play the kids. I'm not sure how much experience the kids they chose had. But really having them perform on live tv should not really be tried by novices.

For the most part, I enjoyed THE SOUND OF MUSIC broadcast.  Carrie was sweet, the vampire guy much better than I had hoped, and Frau Schneider and Max were delightful.  The one exception for me was Rolf.  I understand the actor was only in his mid-twenties, but he looked more like a pedophile than a boyfriend.

And it drove me crazy trying to figure out why I recognized the actress who was playing Frau Schmidt.  Finally, after it was over, I realized that she does a lot of the PBS Pledge Breaks at the National Level, that are then inserted into our local pledge drives.

The guy who played Rolf said he was in college. So wouldn't that make him only like 21?

And I have just now hit my ceiling of SOM comments from the snark set.

It wasn't that they didn't want Broadway actors...it was the Broadway "brat" actor they didn't want.  The kind of kid who over enunciates every word and strikes cute poses every five seconds.

I just realized that I am only several hours away from going back to the theater to try to live up to the hype.

Businesses are closing all around us due to the weather and events are being cancelled left and right.  It's snowing pretty heavily now.

Yes, we're fine, DR TCB.  We went to the grocery yesterday and I'm about to put one of Richard's favorite dinners in the oven - chicken and rice.

Have I been doing this all wrong all these years.   This is the directions part of a recipe for shepherd's pie.

Quote
In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the oil and sear the beef. After two minutes, add the garlic, onion, carrots, celery, and bay leaves. Season with salt and pepper. When the meat is browned and the onion is tender , dust with flour.

Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring often. Pour in the beef broth and cook for 2 minutes until the mixture starts to thicken. Add the tomatoes and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients and taste for seasonings.

Transfer to a 9x13 casserole. Spread the mashed potatoes on top and dab with butter if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Serve warm.

I have never had any cooking classes, only my mom teaching me a few basics, but I always thought you were supposed to dust the meat with flour before you brown it?  Is this correct?

What's equally funny about my little Facebook post is how many instantly misunderstood its point, which, to my mind, was very simple: No way to win no matter which way your wind is blowing, and believe me there was and is plenty of wind blowing on this topic over there.

I'm up - got eight hours of sleep.  Would have gotten nine, but the site went down just before I was going to bed and so I stayed up until it was back up about forty minutes later.

And I'm looking forward to watching it.  Having seen the show on stage several times, including the original version as played on Broadway, I do know that screenwriter Ernest Lehman really helped the film, just as he did with West Side Story.  He deepened characters, he made relationships clearer, etc.  I didn't miss any of the cut songs in the film version and I totally understood why they were gone, and I also didn't mind any of the new songs that were assembled for the film version.  I don't really want to hear ANY of the film songs in the play version - that is THAT version and that is almost, but not quite, what NBC aired last night, which is what they SHOULD have aired.  So of course it should not be compared to the film at all because the film is a FILM and not representative of the musical play, but an adaptation thereof that Mr. Lehman made considerable changes to to make it work as a FILM.

Local people were posting negative comments about Ms. Underwood and SOM at ten minutes after eight last night.  I guess they were afraid that someone might beat them to the punch with one of their snide comments.
