I think vixmom may have fallen asleep.

When we were first married we were living in an apartment int he lower level of a split ranch   the owner was a single young man  of the New York Italian variety

That is to say LOUD

We had been having a problem with stray cats on the property (like by the score !  a neighbor was feeding them they were all diseased and mangy and breeding like bunnies)

So he got a couple of humane traps and put them around

Oh, I thought you meant mob.

early one morning   the landlord and his friends, having been out  until the bars close  (they close at 4 Am here), and having partaken of the wares sold therein , decided to check the traps to see if anything had wandered in

they found not the pussycat they were expecting but a possum instead a possum with its big  teeth snarling at them

A lot of the ones in this neighborhood are three or four times that size.

In their drunken stupors and lack of sleep they decided it was a gigantic rat

 so was the one in the cage - it was a cat size cage and he was much bigger than a cat

So they decided the best thing to do was  fill a garbage pail with water and submerge the cage

This conversation, generously sprinkled with the "f" word  was going on at  27 decibels directly outside our bedroom window

Vixdad got up  quickly there on pants and shoes and ran outside to stop the possumcide

the possum was snarling  for all he was worth and biting at the  bars of the cage so it was not possible to pick it up with your bare hands

SO he  open the back of our car  ( we had a Hyuandai  Excel hatchback in those days  and a good little car she was too , but I digress)

put down plastic sheeting  and then  using broom sticks  and wearing heavy gloves lifted the possum , cage and all into the back of our car

by then I was dressed and joined him- we drove the possum to a local state park (about a mile from where we weer living )

The park  is a 463-acre day use park bisected by Carll's Creek and Belmont Lake. The park, established in 1926 had been owned by August Belmont and served as farmland for some of Belmont's equestrian activities.

 Carll's Creek stretches 4.2 miles south to the Great South Bay The 42-acre Belmont Lake is encircled by a similar path, making a total of 7.6 miles of multi-use trails.

The park's significant natural features include the 26-acre, spring-fed Belmont Lake and a significant wetland complex.  It is home to permanent and migratory waterfowl populations. Park visitors enjoy watching Osprey diving from high above to catch fish for their young in the spring. Other waterfowl that can be easily spotted include Northern Shovelers, Mergansers, Teal, Great Blue Heron, and Egrets.

by then I was dressed and joined him- we drove the possum to a local state park (about a mile from where we weer living )

we went to one of the pedestrian entrances that lead into the wooded areas  and parked along the street there -- and using the broom sticks Vixdad  gently lifted the cage and carried it into the woods, far from the trail, then using the broomsticks he manged to unlatch the cage and open the door and the possum was freed to love happily ever after ( I hope )

Only once here but i was lucky - only suffered morning sickness once - and learned immediately that bacon and egg sandwiches would have to wait
