Well, it's kind of a mess here at Toyland today: I don't know if the building is closed for the long weekend or if the doorman is late, but the front doors are locked. I sent everyone an email telling them that if the doors are still locked when they get here to ring me and I'll come down.

This place seems full of chairs when I'm here alone, but we've got nine people coming, plus conductor and pianist, and I've actually got only seven chairs! This is not boding well. and it's my error. I can stand or crouch in a corner, but i need my cast and conductor happier than I fear they may be. Oy!

Looking forward to playing in our AACB concert. No family coming despite me asking my brother to bring my parents...the first time I've ever asked him to do something like that. BUT, Paul and another friend are using my family passes, so I will have someone in the audience for me. Having no one there was really getting old

Thanks JRand.   This is one of the first concerts where I really feel comfortable with all the pieces and we're doing a few that have some very tough passages.  It's taken three years, but I feel like I"m almost back to where I was when I quit playing years ago.  It means a lot to me

Just got a fun e-mail from the director/teacher of the high school production of The Brain in the UK, telling me the show was a rousing success and the kids had a blast doing it.  Here's a photo - more in tomorrow's notes - but I'm always happy when my signature Brain hand move is retained.  It's the first thing I thought of going way back to the very first staged reading at LACC and it's been in all my productions since, even when Adam Cates came on to really choreograph the rest of the show.

Word of the Day CHIRK

Defined, as used in the following example (any resemblance to persons living, dead, undead or otherwise is unintended except for purposes of parody and/or satire, whichever comes first):

Zsa Zsa and Charo are in a Beverly Hills buffet and are shocked, shocked at running into one another.
Zsa Zsa: "Oh dahling, you look vunderful."  [Said with cold, mechanical indifference to Charo].
[Zsa Zsa disappears into the buffet crowd looking to reunite with the surviving cast from her appearance on "Mister Ed" in 1962].
Charo: Gracias, [waits for Zsa Zsa to get further away] . . . . chee es such a chirk!

{With many apologies to the dramaturgists out there; it was, perhaps, a long way to go for a chirky, cheap joke.}

Good morning, all! I had a terrible night of sleep; at some point in the middle of the night,  a snow plough, or something that sounded as though scaffolding were being erected passed down 82nd Street creating quite a racket for too long a time. I could see signs of a rotating light and hear a lot of noise, but I refused to go to the window and look.  I wonder if it hit a car or got stuck.

Then, I was wide awake at 5:30, thinking about today's ROBERTA rehearsal, and at 6:45, i figured to hell with it tand got out of bed.  I'm pondering my itinerary and today's agenda before I head to Toyland.  I need to stop and pick up a bit of lunch and some bottled water for the office fridge, Do I do that on the Upper West Side or wait till I'm on Sixth and 27th? Decisions, decisions . . .

And that's my day.  I will check in from Toyland.

Maybe this is a good omen for you.  Today, I decided to watch some episodes of "You Bet Your Life".  The very first one I chose was in the middle of one of the DVDs, originally broadcast in November of 1955.  The second team chose the subject of musicals.  Their very first question was to name that tune, and it was "Lovely to Look At" from "Roberta".  They got it right.

They wouldn't today. Have you seen Musicals come up as a Jeopardy category? Millennials don't know Rodgers and Hammerstein or any of the show's they've written, with the possible exception of "Sound of Music" or the Brandy version of "Cinderella." They don't know Jerry Herman. They don't even know shows from their own era.
