I think it is simply economics and unions.

At one time one needed stagehands to raise and lower curtains via ropes. But when the were able to raise and lower them via electricity you still need to pay stagehands even though they didn't do anything.

I also miss curtains in movie theaters.

Good morning, all! I slept rather well, but my muscles ache, my nose won't stop running, and I can't stop sneezing. I believe I will cancel my physical therapy and leave the house only for an emergency. I also believe that I am over the Daylight Savings Time hump.

DR JohnG, I must say I agree with you about Kevin Smith. I loved CLERKS and CHASING AMY, but I felt MALL RATS didn't rate so high. I doubt i've seen a Kevin Smith film since then. I feel the same about Todd Solondz; I loved WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, and hated everything after that.

I wonder if the people who did away with the show/front curtain did so because they thought it was perceived as "old fashioned." And they want their theatre to be oh so now, so with it, so au courant.

So, let me get this straight.

We are looking to get 1-3 inches of snow tomorrow night through Wednesday morning?

How many times has this winter said it's leaving the building? I am really getting tired of these farewell concerts.

I'm thinking about the precedents I've known for late winter storms. The "Storm of the Century" in '93 was March 12-15. The "April Fool's Day Blizzard" was in '97. Other than that, just a few small but very irritating things have popped up late. But then there have been some winters which you KNOW are over -- early -- like 2010, in which March was clear and we just knew it was done right then. You could feel it. For total aggravation, I nominate this one to the history books.

Around 3:00 this morning, I heard a crack that I thought was a mousetrap killing a mouse. Nope. It was more of my bathroom ceiling falling to the floor. It's swept up and thrown out.

Yes! Curtains! In playhouses and movie theaters alike.

I have a busy day ahead of me; otherwise, I would rant till hell won't have it again.

Let's just say that it touches a nerve (as do the appropriate passages in the Kritzer novels, and as does any discussion of same), and I am serious when I say I feel very very strongly about it.

Elmore, don't get me started on Todd Solenz. I did like a few moments of Happiness, but I more disturbed by it. And that's what he wanted. But Palindromes? Horrible.

TOD: I grew up in Louisville where we had curtains at the movie theater, but not at the live theater. Whoever designed the two stages at Actors Theatre of Louisville did not include space for a curtain or shape the theaters to accommodate them.

I love curtains in both.

My favorite curtain moment was when I went to Road Warrior for the first time. The beginning of the movie is a snippet from Mad Max, shot in black and white and on a small scale. The curtain opened up to only that point. When the apocalypse happens and the movie blows up to full widescreen glory, the curtain shot back at that moment. Whoever choreographed that curtain created an effect that has remained with me for 30+ years.

Personally, I think it was a financial decision.

If you don't have a curtain, you don't have to pay somebody to pull it. And, if it's an electronic curtain, you don't have to buy or maintain the apparatus.
