Back from stuff, including a meatless Cobb salad.  I forgot that our Kritzerland rehearsal actually starts thirty minutes earlier, which is good as that will allow me to pretty much get to LACC on time or shortly thereafter.  I think but can't be completely sure, that the waters are a bit calmer today - I'm not sure how swift any resolution will be, but I'm hoping that we can just mush on with our show.  I was asked if the designer run, which was cancelled yesterday, could be done tomorrow - since we're missing Sami tomorrow I asked if it could be on Monday instead and that was fine.  So, that was heartening and I'll take any heartening I can get at this point.

My dad's not been in the best of health lately. Turns out he accidentally huffed some paint fumes, before disposing of some old cans, and that's what caused his problems. At 86.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Or get him into rehab.

Just grateful he's better now.

Sad news:

The lady I "back up" at work had a seizure Friday night.  She was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center where she was diagnosed as having blood clots on her brain.  She was partially paralyzed.

Yesterday, the doctors decided they had to operate to remove the clots.  The operation did not succeed and "Sharon" is essentially brain dead and on life support.  They are waiting for her son to arrive before removing life support.

We are all stunned.

That's horrible!  My condolences to her family and to everyone who knew her.

Two AWESOME things happened on this day in history:

In 1931, the greatest building in NYC was opened, the Empire State Building.  (Okay, I like the Chrysler Building too, and it's prettier/more handsome in some ways, but it doesn't have quite the same history or recognizability around the globe, unfortunately.)

Ten years later, in 1941, the greatest movie ever made was released, "Citizen Kane".  (I know, it's a matter of debate since "Vertigo" usurped CK in the BFI poll.)

Since it's Throw-Back Thursday elsewhere on the Internet, here's my contribution.  It's the staff of the library at Miami University-Middletown at the opening of the 1980-81 academic year.

Nice photo DR Ginny.  I do hope the woman on the top right was much friendlier than she appears in the photo.

I am now well enough to go through the preliminaries for surgical repair of my rather large ventral hernia.

Is that as painful as it sounds?

Congratulations you continue to improve and vibes the surgery won't set you back much.

Topic of the Day:  essentially, everything that's been said. :-\

MATRON (Spoken)
The whole world's gone low-brow. Thing's ain't what they used to be.

VELMA (Spoken)
They sure ain't, Mama. They sure ain't it's all gone.

(Singing)
Whatever happened to fair dealing?
And pure ethics
And nice manners?
Why is it everyone now is a pain in the ass?
Whatever happened to class?

MATRON
Class.
Whatever happened to, "Please, may I?"
And, "Yes, thank you?"
And, "How charming?"
Now, every son of a bitch is a snake in the grass
Whatever happened to class?

VELMA and MATRON
Class!
Ah, there ain't no gentlemen
To open up the doors
There ain't no ladies now,
There's only pigs and whores
And even kids'll knock ya down
So's they can pass
Nobody's got no class!

VELMA
Whatever happened to old values?

MATRON
And fine morals?

VELMA
And good breeding?

MATRON
Now, no one even says "oops" when they're
Passing their gas
Whatever happened to class?

VELMA
Class

VELMA and MATRON
Ah, there ain't no gentlemen
That's fit for any use
And any girl'd touch your privates
For a deuce

MATRON
And even kids'll kick your shins and give you sass

VELMA
And even kids'll kick your shins and give you sass

VELMA and MATRON
Nobody's got no class!

VELMA
All you ready about today is rape and theft

MATRON
Jesus Christ, ain't there no decency left?

VELMA and MATRON
Nobody's got no class!

MATRON
Everybody you watch

VELMA
'S got his brains in his crotch

MATRON
Holy crap

VELMA
Holy crap

MATRON
What a shame

VELMA
What a shame

VELMA and MATRON
What became of class?

After a deluge of rain yesterday, we had a sunny day today, with temps in the high 70s.  Hoping it won't get hot too soon.  I'm in no hurry for summer weather.

Thank you DR Jane.  No, the hernia is annoying as it makes me look fat, makes my clothes not fit properly, and the potential for lower digestive tract problems is ever present, so I must be watchful for any irregularities.  I will be very happy when it can be successfully and safely repaired.

DR Dan M - any surgery is of course a concern, but it does sound like things are moving in the right direction. Glad you have the good news and that your doctors are positive.

Thanks DR singdaw!  Yes, it is another step in the full-health and remission direction!

Yes, I have been to date fortunate.  My white blood cell counts are improving, so I guess that may be why the surgery is being considered.  Having celiac disease, I am always careful about what I eat, but with the hernia situation, I have to make sure certain things are in my diet, and so far so good!

DR Dan you should be proud of yourself for taking such good care of yourself.  Sticking to a strict diet is far from easy.

She was one of a kind, DR Jane, but we got along fine.  She represented the library staff on the search committee when I was a candidate for director.  She said there were stories about the process that she'd tell me one day.  She took them to her grave.

They just had Sam Jones on the afternoon newscast.  He is appearing at the Seattle Sci-Fi Festival in  Seattle tonight for the showing of Flash Gordon, and he is signing posters prior to the showing.  (Sorry, M Barnum, I doubt you could get here in time.)  He looks like he is still physically fit, but he is certainly 35 years older.
