My trip to Portland on Saturday to see the 1954 version of Godzilla was splendid.
I went up a bit early and prowled around town for awhile, visiting some antique/retro shops and then haveing lunch at the Lauralwood Pub and Grill where I had a tasty mound of buscuits and gravy (although there was far too much bisucuit, and not enough gravy for it all). I was unable to interest any of my buddies to go along..well, my friend Ron wanted to, but he had to work.
Since childhood I have seen Godzilla at least three dozen times, but I always enjoy it. This was the original Japanese release...no Raymond Burr insert shots (although I love that version as well). As I grow older I tend to appreciate this film more and more, noticing how it is not just about a big monster smashing Tokyo, but how people react to a threat whether it keeping secrets, fighting each other, political tugs of war, etc. It is still a relevant film and has some amazing performances.
