Greetings, all!

And Happy Birthday DR ArnoldMBrockman!

BK, I'm keeping lots of positive thoughts for a good resolution for you on that issue you are handling. I'm so sorry you've had to deal with despicable acts from people who have no business treating anyone that way, much less you. I'm glad you are getting both friends' and legal advice on this as well. Onward and upward.

Thank You

From DR John:
Quote
My mom seems to be the one who stopped it and she did so after getting a hold of my brother-in-law, who convinced my dad that my sister had indeed taken her son to school today, so he didn't have time to get to Mexico.

Good for her.  Has your father always been this stubborn that he wouldn't wait for your mother to track down your nephew prior to sending the funds? If so, maybe it isn't a sign of dementia.

My hiking group went up to Grizzly Peak this morning, elevation about 5,000 ft .

Until it began to snow, and we turned around, we saw lots of wildflowers.  Had we been dressed for cold and snow we probably would have finished the hike.

We then drove to the park in town and had a lovely walk.

Had some soup and a sandwich for my meal o' the day, have been dealing with wrangling the seats for our event - finally got a good seat count from the theater, 308, so I was able to get some of the waiting list confirmed.  I still have fifteen or so seats left that I'm holding, but I'll release those tomorrow and we should be able to get in almost everyone from the wait list - and then my advice will be for the other folks to just show up at the door.

I spoke with my dad this morning. He was lucid. He detailed everything that happened yesterday. And he's embarrassed to the core by it.

I told him that what he did showed how much he loves the members of his family and what he would do for us.

Both he and my mother put a stop to it as it was unfolding, but since they don't have caller ID, they have no way of tracing the calls. It turns out that not only did the first caller use my nephew's name, he also used the word "Opa," which is what the nephew uses to call him. So, whoever the scammer was did some homework.

It turns out that CVS will refund one of the money cards my dad bought, and the rest are good to be used wherever, so they aren't out any money. But, oh, is his pride hurt.

Another good point in all of this is that my folks may give up their landline phone and get a family plan of cellphones, which means will be harder for scammers to get to since the number will be unlisted. It will also give them caller ID.

Well, this is a good outcome, and your comment was very wise and kind. I just would have bitched at my father. Just like my mother.

Only I'm saner.

I doubt caller I.D. would have helped.  It is scary they knew Opa is his name, no wonder they were able to scam him.  I'm glad money wasn't lost and the crooks didn't get any.

There are blocks for phones, or get them something with call waiting.  I doubt they will be scammed again.  My issue with dropping the land line is that we both can't get on the phone at the same time.

What you said to your father is perfect.  Vibes he lets go of his embarrassment.

DR Jane, Rob will often call my cell phone or Richard's and ask to be put on speaker when wants to talk to both of us about something.  Like when he and Mary Linda became engaged (good) or when his company went out of business and he lost his job (bad).

DR John G, I'm so glad there's not more to your Dad's incident than some embarrassment.  You dealt with him very kindly.

Yes i agree that you handled it well. And thankfully no money was lost. I guess the moral of the story is if someone calls do not send them money.  But crazy how they knew so much info.
