I haven't been able to shake "Great Expectations," though it seems to be trying to shake me.
I watched a mediocre 6-hour British mini-series and then started playing the two musical versions I have. The first, with Tovah Feldshuh and Sally Ann Howes, had only a piano for accompaniment and much of the lyrics was lifted almost directly from the novel. It was misguided, to say the least.
Now, I'm listening to the would-be Andrew Lloyd Webber version, which has an overblown score and wretched lyrics, such as "Cobwebs and Cake," the big number for Miss Havisham. It also has one of those tenors with a ridiculous high range playing Pip. I expect to hear dogs barking the next time he reaches for one of those high notes.
