Our state legislature, in its wisdom, made fireworks legal to buy a few years ago. The cities all banned lighting them. Last year the state legislature passed a law forbidding cities from banning them the first week in July and the week of New Years.

ah those clever politicians

I was just looking at photos of the flooding from Hurricane Arthur.  Here the lawns are turning brown because of the lack of water.

And I am home from my afternoon out with Bruce Pomahac. I am very angry at myself for misplacing my senior citizen Metrocard. I will have to contact the MTA on Monday to obtain a new one. Crap!

Computer animation in 1983/84 wasn't what it is now. So when they filmed The Natural (which I haven't seen), for the baseball stadium scenes they used a mix of live extras with cutouts.
My landlady acquired some of those cutouts, which she proudly displays on July 4th.    :)

That's looks great, Sing!  Star Wars (in 1977) did the same thing, and for a movie with such special special effects, they really do look obvious:

My son usually comes over on Fridays. It used to be for breakfast, then it turned into lunch. Last week he came at 4 p.m.

We had a really big expense hit us this week, so I decided that rather than spend $30 going for lunch, we'd just finish up the pork loin sandwiches. I boiled up the potatoes (since DR Sandra hadn't needed them for mashed potatoes after her wisdom tooth extraction and they need to be used) and made some potato salad. I found -- (don't read this part, John) -- a cake mix and tub of frosting, -- (OK - you can read again, John) -- and sent my DH to the store for corn on the cob and ice cream.

Sounds great to me.

I'm becoming obsessed with this story out of Georgia about the father who left his 2-year-old son in the car. It gets sleazier by the second and I am riveted to the updates.

I've only been reading the headlines, but it doesn't seem to be good for the father, at all. :P

Last evening was suprisingly free of fireworks, but I doubt we shall be so lucky tonight.  I hope everyone has a wonderful 4th and eats lots and lots of great picnic food.

The family went to my parents' house and we had pizza.  No one wanted the hassle of a barbecue.  My mom is planning on going to the Red Wind Casino (or somewhere near there) and watching their fireworks.  I would assume that they can do it quite well.

This year is the 200th anniversary of the national anthem.  Who knew?  On "A Capitol Fourth" on PBS, John Williams has arranged a brand new arrangement that they're playing.

This link should take you to the story about the woman who saved the Fourth of July .  I had no idea when I was there.   The story counts down, we are at the 1:00 mark.  If this isn't a small town Iowa story, there isn't one, lol

I love it when she says "The man who was running it died and they didn't tell anyone"  I can't imagine how people didn't find out in a town that small

Fireworks are legal in South Dakota and Nebraska but not here.  Since we're on the corner of Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska, there are fireworks everywhere and they just don't stop. Boo is scared but does ok with an occasional hug.  Ricky is scared and was over eating, but a brushing calmed him down...Callie is just curled up in her bed, can't tell if it bothers her or not

Damn!  Frankie Valli is short!  No wonder he stands so far away from the new Four Seasons.

There's a lot of noise here, but my cat Ebonie seems okay...right now.

I don't know if I disappoint you with this, but I have used a cake mix before. I actually find making the cake from scratch a little easier, but I think it's because I understand what you do when you do it from scratch rather than relying on the cake mix to do it. But I do like some cake mixes, especially strawberry.

Make my pie. Cleaned the bird's cage. Loaded the dish washer. And am roasting a pumpkin. I want a nap. But I can't do until the pumpkin roasts. Another hour.

Where do you find a pumpkin at this time of year?

I told you I hadn't cleaned. It was left over from last fall, but it was still whole. No bruises, no blemishes. And it was good.

I think I may treat myself to a cocktail (or two) when I get to our family event.

If I were going to a family event, I would have to medicate myself with cocktails. (That is, depending on which family members showed.)

It's illegal to buy fireworks within the county, so there are stands at the county line of every way in which you can leave Bexar County.

My friends put on quite the show tonight. I really enjoyed the Chinese lanterns, which you light and they fly far into the sky. I had never seen those before.

Partay was fine.  The usual suspects with some new faces I hadn't seen before - one of them belonging to the talented actor James Karen.  I hung around for ninety minutes then left, went to Gelson's, got an assortment of foodstuffs and came home.

I hope everyone had a happy 4th of July!  I treated myself to "1776", "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and two helpings of baked beans with Nathan's Dinner Hot Dogs cut up and cooked with them.   It was yummy yummy yummy (just like love in my tummy).
