I can't remember which film it was but I did see La Cage Aux Folles on home video. It gave you the option to watch it with English subtitles or in the English dub version. (Victor Garber was Albin and Dick Latessa was Renaldo)

For the fun of it I watched it in the English dubbed and English subtitles and they were two different translations of the dialogue!

TOD. It was probably Three Penny Opera at the Huntington Arts Cinema. The 2nd was probably LaCage Aux Folles. I much preferred the subtitled version I didn't care for the voices in the dubbed version

And now I must start my day I won't be back for some time as I will be at the theatre tonight. We'll movie theatre watching the Tim rice from here to eternity. I have heard. Nothing of the score nor read any reviews so it shall all be a surprise. The Vixter will be joining me

I was mistaken about the FROM HERE TO ETERNITY showing -- I thought it was the film, but saw last night that it's the Tim Rice musical (?). I'll pass on that, myself, this time, and shall look forward to vixmom's comments.

I'd think this would be a little easier to pin down -- watching a foreign film with subtitles for the first time -- but I'm not positive because I don't recall it ever seeming unnatural or odd to me. But it's even harder to think of what my first foreign film, period, might be. Anyhoo...

My first one in English might be HEAVENS ABOVE! (1963) with Peter Sellers, which played at the then-newly opened Sunrise Cinemas I & II, a theater that was to become one of the most loved movie venues of my teenage years.

My first foreign film with subtitles is likely Bergman's THE MAGICIAN, seen on 16mm during my college years. That would have been around 1970, which seems a little late in my life to be getting exposed to subtitled films, but I'm at a loss to come up with anything earlier. I'll have to keep thinking about this.

Good morning, all! I got home from ON THE TOWN around 1:15, had a bit of food to take with my meds and went to bed. I'm a bit groggy this morning, but I am still smiling over how wonderful so much of the show is. The 29-piece orchestra sounds fantastic, although a couple of tempos I feel may be a bit fast for the lyrics to settle, and one cast member everyone loves leaves me cold. Still, my criticisms are nitpicking, because the production has so many wonderful things and it's so much better than the last revival in direction and choreography. I loved Michael Rupert as Judge Pitkin W. Bridgework.

So, I've got an errand at 1:00, my doctor at 3:15, and I think Josh and Jeremy Clayton are stopping by after their violin lesson so I can give Jeremy a copy of the ROBERTA CDs.

I finally listened to the sound clips. I think they sound fantastic, and I hope it sells well.

Although there are certain foreign films that I do like, I am really not a big fan of movies where I have to read subtitles.

I think that the first foreign film I saw was WILD STRAWBERRIES.

I was in my first or second years of college and was going through a short phase of American movies stink and the only good movies are foreign. Then, I saw LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD, which looked (to me) like the editor had tossed all the pieces of film up into the air, then put them back together in whichever order he pulled them out of the pile. That film turned me off of foreign films for quite awhile.

Yet, as I said, there are films that I really do like. I just have to be in the mood to read.
