Monday morning greetings!  I slept like a rock until 5am, then fitfully until about 8.  I've spent the morning reading the ending of Jeffrey Eugenides' Middlesex.  It's the October selection for the book group that meets at the library where I began my career.  I won't be able to attend the discussion because it's on the same day Richard is having carpal tunnel surgery, but I was engrossed in the book before I knew the date of the meeting.  The Detroit setting was very evocative for me and now I want to read his other books.

For some of us, it is Columbus Day.  But for some of us, it is Indigenous Peoples Day.

I am so happy that I no longer live in Washington State.

TOD:

I really haven't seen much this year that I really liked.  Of course, I no longer go to movie theaters, so I haven't seen anything that hasn't come out onto DVD.

I did LOL at the remake of GAMBIT with Colin Firth.  Thought it was quite funny.

The one thing that I really liked was the TV series of FARGO.  It's out on DVD now and I would definitely recommend it.

Monday.....

I enjoyed PARADE very much....there were some very good performances in it, and all of the singers were very good....and the music was done very well.

A couple of the actors in supporting roles were weaker, but even they were terrific singers.  I don't think I need to see the show again....but it is good.

We saw THE KING AND I yesterday at the ZACH.  I had never seen it on stage before.

It was a terrific production (acting, costumes, sets, choreography, etc.) of a musical that I don't really care for that much.  The score is magnificent, but the book is weak; slow moving.  Her songs aside, the character of Anna is poorly written; not very interesting at all.

I'm sure most of you will disagree with me on that point.   :)

So, why did I go to a play that I don't really like?

A friend of mine was playing Kralahome.  He was very good in the role, as was the actor playing the King.  Indeed, I thought he was better than Brynner.

No, DR Ron Pulliam - it's just yesterday's HHW topic title.      :)

Perhaps, given the passage of time, your yesterday should become a sequester day!

Congratulations to our very own Elmo for a "positive" nod for his work on "Roberta" from the reviewer at Playbill.com .   I like the score to "Roberta" considerably better than Mr. Suskin, but he at least gives some credit where it's due.

I am certainly enjoying Amazon.com Prime. Last night I streamed, for free, one of my favorite Allison Hayes films...DOUBLE JEOPARDY (1955) co-starring Rod Cameron and Jack Kelly. It was so nice to finally see an absolutely beautiful print of this film!

Some of Allison's other film(ish) noirs are available for streaming, including HONG KONG CONFIDENTIAL and COUNTERPLOT. Maybe PIER 5, HAVANA is there also, but I can't remember.

Columbus was a "bad person," and they want to be politically correct.

Well, yes, someone who slaughtered innocents and sold children as sex slaves is certainly not worthy of celebration. Do you think it should be replaced with something other than Indigenous Peoples Day?

Oregon has never really celebrated Columbus Day. Here it is mostly known only as the day a tragic storm came though killing several people and causing huge damage in the northwest part of the state back around 50 years ago.

Mr Suskin has panned every recording I've worked on with New World Records, but for someone who is hired to review music, he's no musician and he's very condescending about period musicals.  He's much more eager to deflect his  tiny musical knowledge by how much he knows abut the show's production and how much he dislikes Harbach's lyrics.

Also, for someone who - he points out immediately - wrote a book on Broadway orchestrations, he says nothing about this recording's charts.

I would like to see it, but since I have no money for a movie,  I'll probably end up watching the DVD in another year.

Monday-- Columbus Day.

It is a Federal Holiday.   The City and County work today, because they traded Columbus Day for Cesar Chavez Day (I think).   There is garbage pick-up but no mail delivery.

Superior Court ids open, but the Court of Appeals and District Court are closed.

Very confusing.

We don't have the day off.  If I remember correctly, years ago state workers negotiated to work Columbus Day so that they could get the day after Thanksgiving off.  That's why we have a four-day weekend at Thanksgiving.  The library follows the state and federal holidays that the state workers get.

The more Suskin I read the less enamored I am with his writing. At least with the substance of his writing. He says very little of use but employs a lot of words.
