DR Stuart,

Not "Flipper," but keep trying.

I was going to tell this one yesterday - another story about Torontonians and Jewishisms.

Quite a few years ago, Joseph Green, the director of Yidl mitn Fidl, was in Toronto as part of a tribute to his movies.

Our CBC prides itself on being really fussy about pronunciations - and sometimes even goes a bit overboard. But once in awhile the announcers screw up.

One of Joseph Green's most celebrated movies was Mamele (means "little mother," and is pronounced "ma-ma-la"). I was listening to CBC radio's Metro Morning, as its serious host, Joe Coté, interviewed the director.

"So, Mr. Green," Joe asked him, "what does "mameeeeel" mean?"

The poor director didn't have a clue.

DR Jane, if your back is hurting that much I would definitely give muscle relaxants another chance.  I am very sensitive to everything, and they help big time.  Talk to your doctor and pharmacist and see what they can give you.

What's to get ready for Yom Kippur?

Awhile back, around this time of year, I was at the offices of a large publishing company. One of the senior editors told me that he knew Yom Kippur was coming up. He understood that it was the biggest holiday of the year, and he had heard that the food is great on Jewish holidays. So, he concluded, "you must really eat well on Yom Kippur."

That's funny.  Although we do eat pretty well on Saturday night.

Well, what's to get ready?  Some people have to prepare meals - like me!

She of the Evil Eye will be here shortly (I had her come this week and then she'll be back on her once every two weeks sched) - last week she couldn't actually clean several rooms because there were over a hundred boxes strewn about, but now there are 0 count them 0 boxes strewn about (not that there aren't boxes I haven't gone through, but they're in the garage) so she can now clean those rooms, too.

It's quite pretty out this morning - people are walking their dogs.  I have yet to meet any of my immediate neighbors, although I met a nice fellow walking his dog who lives a few houses north of me.

              INPUT REQUESTED FROM DRS

I'd like to buy an inexpensive but decent digital camera. What features should I look for? What is a must? Is there a particular model, perhaps, that you would recommend?
Merci!

We seem to have returned to the slowness we had yesterday morning. It's taken me quite a while to get here. I click and then just minimize and wait for the screen to load. Damn those pingers, damn them all to hell!

DIT. Thanks. I'll tell Anthony you said that.

I'm home today because I slept wrong (wrongly?) and my back hurts a bit.

So, in my CD player at work:  nothing.

In my VCR:  nothing...last night I watched everything that I taped last night while watching other things.

In my DVD player:  "Party Monster:  The Shockumentary."  According to Netflix (where I got it) "This sometimes-gruesome-but-engrossing documentary, a 1998 Sundance Film Festival entry, traces the path that club-kid-gone-bad Michael Alig followed as he metamorphosed from being one of New York's most famous party promoters to a drug-addled murderer. Includes a prison interview with Alig....  I have the movie "Party Monster" with Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green and wanted to know what the real story is.  The movie's pretty accurate...and it's scary what some people can do.

In my CD burner:  this morning I taped a radio interview from St. Louis with Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer!  I also called in and was on the radio!!    I got to talk with Janis!!  Okay, it was only about 30 seconds, but still!  After the interview with Janis, they had a segment on the touring company of Forbidden Broadway that was playing in town.  So I'm going to cut out the commercials and put it on a CD.  That's what in my CD burner!

Good Morning!

Ah, sleep.  It was so nice to sleep - well, at least to get more than four hours of it last night.  However, my "waking" this morning was a bit amusing in retrospect.

Around 6:00am, I started hearing someone's really loud radio.  It was tuned to some morning shock jock - not Howard Stern but some L.A. person - ??.  I just stayed in bed listening to this rant go on and on... and on (ah, a BABY reference).  "Who has their radio turned up so loud?!?!?"  Well... A few minutes go by, and a small light bulb goes off in my head.  I walk down the hall to the bedroom - which is empty right now since they moved the major furniture yesterday - and, sure enough, there's a clock radio sitting there on the floor.  The "alarm" had gone off.  And since it was playing in an empty room, it had quite the "ambience" to it.  So, I turn it off, and head back to the living where I'm sleeping - there's a nice air mattress on the floor.  As soon as I get settled, I hear another alarm go off... "beep, beep, beep..."  It was my travel alarm in my bag - It was still set from the other morning when I had to get up early.  Ah....

Thankfully, I made it back to bed, and got a few more hours of sleep...  After getting up - again - I watched some TV, organized some papers, checked some stuff on-line, made some phone calls, and now I'm here...  And now I must get ready to head out for a bit...

But before I go...

DR Jane - I've had a few bouts with back pain over the past few years due to my sciatica...  Give the muscle relaxers a try.  I was put on a very mild - very mild - one a few years ago which helped a lot.  And in conjunction with Advil or Aleve, it really did provide just the right amount of comfort without zonking me out.  See if your doctor is willing to "stage" you in regards to muscle relaxers.  Just have him start you on something very, very mild, and go from there.  -Although, hopefully, like a lot of back pain episodes, it's just an "episode", and it may just go away on it's own in time.

*And just remember, if you do take larger doses of Advil or Aleve, be sure to have food in your stomach.  Otherwise, you could end up dealing with other problems.  -I was on prescription strength ibuprofen once - one pill was equivalent to four(!) of the OTC pills!  Who knew?!?!?

Yom Kippur Musical/Lyric/Rhyme, first clue:

From the CD: "Reissue Supervised By BRUCE KIMMEL"

Second clue:

The not-so-brilliant lyrics were by someone who also wrote the lyrics for one of the shows on DR Stuart's list of contenders.

CD Player here at work:  The Big Voice:  God or Merman?  So I am particularly interested in DR Noel's impressions, if he managed to snare that ticket for tonight's show, that is.  I have seen neither of Steve Schalchlin's shows, but I have been fascinated by him ever since he started posting his T-cell count back in the last century.

Hmmmmmm...I'm a bit sorry it wasn't from WATERLOGGED myself......

Can I openly and honestly state that I have never thought much of Mr. Merrill as a lyricist?  Certainly he has some bright spots, but probably just as many clunkers.  ("We travel single, oh."   I mean, what IS that??)  I've never thought much of his musical compositions either, I guess.

But thanks for the answer, finally.  My mind had been racing, and though I do own HSH, I don't listen it to it often enough to have committed it to memory.

DR Jane, healing vibes for your back!!!!

There are some good meds for pulled muscles if that is what you have. When I hurt my shoulder at the gym the doctor gave me something that helped wonderfully. It didn't drug me up or anything, but it sure made my shoulder stop hurting!

I find Bob Merrill's work inconsistent. There are some songs I truly enjoy in HSH - particularly "In Some Little World," "Here I Am," and "I Wonder How It Is." But "To Be Artistic"? How could the man who wrote "Her Face," "Promise Me A Rose," and "The Music That Makes Me Dance" have come up with:

"Men kiss men when they're artistic
In admiration for a fellow man
But could you guess
What a bloody mess
If a Green Bay Packer kissed a Ram"
