I think we ALL know who to blame for the dreaded Bran Muffin discussion, oh, yes, I think we ALL know who to blame.

I'm watching Sssss and it's putting me to sleep.  The snakes are fun and the actors are not doubled ever, which is amazing.  Put the direction and pacing is ssssso ssssslow.  The director and crew had probably all eaten Bran Muffins.  I shall be going out to dinner shortly with my pal Barbara Deutsch.

Ok, that was bad, I aplogize.  Long day with kids in the classroom.  Who's idea was it to have a once a week music class on a FRIDAY?  Good luck teaching ANYTHING with substance when everyone's mind is on the weekend, especially after lunch!

It's Fridays at 2:30 I teach a musical theatre workshop at a college in New Jersey.

Bran muffins used to be a big part of my diet.  Nowadays, if I have any sort of muffin in a month, it's rare.  Oddly, though, I had a muffin today... raspberry cheese.  The raspberry part was bright pink; the cheese part, a yellowy off-white.

Speaking of which, what's Highest Yellow about?  I'm pretty sure Kudisch was here this week, doing The Man Who Would Be King by my friends Neil Berg and D.J. Salisbury.

And speaking of cheap steaks, I just had one for dinner, over a piece of bread.  DW Joy couldn't imagine it would be good, but, she tasted a bite and had to admit

Next we'll be discussing prunes and Early Bird Specials! This is a young-cool-with-it site, people.
Forget the fershluganah muffins already. And DR Jay, don't pull that "I'm jumping out the window" trick. We weren't born yesterday. That is for sure.

Forget the fershluganah muffins?  Let us all go back and see who began the discussion, who carried on the discussion and who can't let the Bran Muffin Fix go.  Oh, yes, let us all do that and see which name we come up with.

And, of course, Jay HAS jumped out the window - now, don't you feel BAD?  Of course, he lives in a one-story house so he didn't go far, but still, it's the thought that counts or, at the very least, it's the count that thoughts.

Perhaps I shall tell the story of The Randy Vicar and the Egg White.

I'm sleepy, too. And I'm not watching SSSSS.
I've decided NOT to order a you-know-what tonight. Which leaves me in a quandary (a WHAT IF? reference) -- What DO I order? What is the polite thing to order while talking (in Hungarian) about people being killed and buildings being burned down and shooting and looting. A cheese danish, perhaps?

They are now called dried plums.  As tasty as they are one must be careful not to eat too many.  ;D

Oh - one more thing... makes me laugh.  My nick-name for my Ever-Loving Eric is "The Muffin Man" (he's a pastry chef), brings whole new meaning when I sing "Do You know the Muffin Man" with my young kids in class.  I can honestly answer that I DO know the muffin man!

Clearwater--that's where most of the old folks stay.   How familiar are you with it?

Well, the first time I went there was in... 1977!
I was living in Montréal then, and a Canadian friend of mine had a condo in Safety Harbor, where the Spa is.
I remember the famous Kapoke Tree Restaurant which closed a few years ago!

Then, in the eighties, I had the opportunity of going back there often. I forget the name of the big Shopping Mall on the way to Clearwater Beach; I enjoyed going there, and it was so sad, when I went back for a visit "to my past" in Florida, in 2001 to see that huge place almost empty, with hardly ten stores remaining open, mainly haidressers'....

I also went many times to the terrific Eckerd Ruth Hall, downtown Clearwater, where I saw Julie and also Rosemary Clooney in her Christmas Show....

http://www.rutheckerdhall.com/
Bernadette P. is to appear there next January!!

In 2001, on my way in from France, I landed in Tampa late at night, rented a car and checked in some motel, and went first thing in the morning to Clearwater Beach: I love the causeway leading to the beach, with those huge bushes -- I did not print kerries, you noticed!! -- of poisonous laurels....

There are LOADS of old folks everywhere in Florida, Danise!!

I have also been to Ruth Eckerd many times.  Of course the last thing I saw was Millie.

That's a bit far for me to drive and I refuse to go over the bridges alone at night but it does make for a nice day drive.

I think I was only at the Kapoke Tree Restaurant once. When I was 16.

As for there being LOADS of old folks everywhere in Florida, I couldn't say.  I never noticed.   ;)

It depends.  Was it Denmark that attacked Hungary?

I knew someone in a basement apartment who tried to kill herself by jumping out the window, up to street level

I've just returned from dinner with Miss PennyO who sends her love to all the Hainsies and Kimlets.  She's now in NYC, keeping busy, and looking for a new sublet.  We had dinner at Artie's Deli.  She had a vegetable platter and my baked potato, and I had stuffed cabbage and mixed veggies.  It was a pleasant visit, and I heard from her how fantastic the WHATIF revue was.

Thanks DR Jane and Panni for the get better thoughts! I am stuffed up but I WILL survive! LOL! Damn, allergies!

Well, I just finished interviewing (via the phone) Mr. Tony Russel (a.k.a Tony Russo) who starred in a number of Italian action/sci-fi/gladiator films in the 60s, and a few American ones as well. Very nice guy and I had lots of fun hearing about his career!

Media Check:

CD:  Queen Latifah's "The Dana Owens Album"  her jazz album that was just released.  While she is in very good voice, the cd seems overproduced, especially for a jazz album.  Herbie Hancock is on hand, however, for "I Put A Spell On You."

DVD:  Call Me Madam.  I can't get over how OTT the Merm is, and how much fun it is to watch her lob "You're Just In Love."

VHS:  Joey, Will & Grace and the Presidential Debate

BOOK:  Kritzerland, by BK.  Which I love.  But what in the hell is a Spenser steak?

The Wellington, never stayed there, but I had friends who did when I was living in NY in 1969.  Here's a question: Whatever happened to Beef Wellington?  It was quite popular when I was growing up (and quite pricey) and I had it several times and loved it.  I haven't recalled seeing it on a menu in the last twenty years.
This, from Fashionable Food, by Sylvia Lovegren:

Beef Wellington was the premier party dish of the 1960's.  Even more than coq au vin, veal Orloff, beef strganoff, steak Kiane, seak au poivre, or duckling a l'orange, it was rich, dramatic, expensive, and seemed difficult and time-consuming to prepare.  In short, it was everything a gourmet dish should be.

For those not in the know, Beef Wellington was a fillet of beef, coated with pate de fois gras or a mushroom duxelles, wrapped in a pastry and baked.  The idea was to get the pastry flaky and crisp while the beef inside remained fairly rare.  (Sorry, Jane.)  Usually, puff pastry was used for the crust.  A sauce made with Madeira was often served with the dish.

It was, for a time, quite the dish to be served at dinner parties.  Unfortunately, because many home chefs weren't up to the task of making it properly, several rip-off versions showed up, to where any meat wrapped in pastry was called "Wellington," whether for good or ill.  Also, tastes began to change, became more sophisticated, and the sophistication of Beef Wellington became suspect as it became less cutting edge.  Some wags even suggested that the reason it was called Beef Wellington was not because it was the duke's favorite dish, but because it resembled the boots he wore.

Properly prepared, it is still a dish worth pursuing.  It just isn't considered "popular" any more.

SWW when I ate meat, I wanted it fairly rare.  Prime rib in our house was only served medium rare, more on the pink side then brown.

With that thought I'm tempted to eat some of the ice cream Keith is about to indulge in.  I shall be good because I want to eat my heart out in NY.
