TOD 2:

Went to the Newport Jazz Festival at Saratoga Springs to see Miles Davis, who had been put on the bill at 5 or so in the afternoon. Each act was supposed to play for an hour and then disappear. But the crowd would not let Davis leave. He was the act they had come to hear and he stayed on for 7 encores. It was astounding. I was down in the pit getting pictures and got to see his face. The music hit something wonderful with the entire audience.

Davis was followed by Mel Torme and the amphitheater emptied. But his singing went out over the sound system and pretty soon, the theater was packed once again. And by the time he finished, the full house wouldn't let him leave the stage. He also did 7 encores. Before the last, he said, "Who do you think I am, Miles Davis?" He was obviously touched. Since he hadn't rehearsed a lot with the band, they finished off by singing the stuff they started with, including a medley of songs from "Guys and Dolls."

That put the schedule off by three hours. Tito Puente, the headliner, didn't make it onstage until 2 a.m. By then, there were no encores, no exceptions, but it was OK, nobody who followed deserved to be called back.

A BUNCH OF MORONS:

Apparently, the Texas DMV is operated by a bunch of morons.

A few weeks ago, my wife and I got our auto license renewal notifications.  We had our cars inspected and, about the first of this month, we sent in a check for the amount the notification said was due.

Today, the check and all of our renewal paperwork was returned with a handwritten notification that we had underpaid the bill by about $20.00.

WRONG!  We paid the exact amount that was requested in the notification.

I spoke to people at both the DMV and the Travis County Tax Assessor's Office.  They admitted to me that it was their error and that MANY people were sent a bill with the wrong amount due.  Their response: "Well, you should have called us and asked the correct amount."

My response: "If I have to call you, what's the point of mailing out a bill?'

This is your tax dollars at work, folks.

Wow!  My dad LOVES Miles Davis.  He would kill to have been able to see him perform live.

I think I slept maybe two hours, thanks to an allergy attack.  I finally got up at nine-thirty after a telephonic call with Sandy.  Then I heard from Piano Man who will be here at three to put it back the way it was only better.

Then I went directly to Grant's and we got all the fixes entered in about twenty-five minutes.  He worked a bit on the cover and I'm hoping to have that later today.  I'll now give the FINAL book layout one more quick look-see and that will be done.

I wish I had been there.  Of course I would not have walked out when Mel Torme came on.  I am very pleased the audience returned.

I had a credit card company cancel my card for an unpaid bill.  I had called way in advance of moving and given them my new address.  They said it was my fault for not calling them when I didn't receive my bill.

For years and years they attempted to get me back and not only did I refuse but Keith also canceled his card.

There was a time when if someone said he had gone to Grant's, I'd have known the he had gone to a local five-and-ten store!

I found Blue Bunny ice cream in my local grocery store on Friday.

I had heard of Blue Bunny, but I had never seen Blue Bunny.

I never hoped to see one.

But I can tell you...I'd rather see than be one.

Oh, I crack myself up.

TOD:  I don't have a lot of recollections about extra-long curtain calls, but I think the longest was the one given to Miss Barbara Cook after her stunning 90-minute, intermission-less, "Simply Sondheim" at the Curran Theater a decade back.  She was 75 and it was a stunning concert.

I eat the Blue Bunny mini ice cream cones with sprinkles because they have no chocolate and Precious can have a bite.

Getting ready for an AAUW bored board meeting this evening.  I'll be so glad to pass this responsibility along to someone else...

For those of you who love carpets (and you know who you are), This Airport’s Beloved Carpet Has Inspired Foot Selfies, Tattoos, and an IPA.

However, the article reports that they're replacing the carpet with an updated design that'll be similar, but not the same.

Piano man is thirty minutes late, but will hopefully get everything he needs to do done before I have to leave for dinner at six-thirty.

It's after 4 p.m. here.  Nothing much happening today in the office.

Had a nice Turkey Mediterranean sandwich for lunch (turkey, lettuce, sun-dried tomatoes, feta cheese, black sliced olives on a kaiser roll).

Longest ovation?  Either the end of Bette Midler's 1973 show, the end of Cleo Laine's concert in 1976 or the riot in town Hall in 1985 at the end of the glorious "Some Girl Is On Your Mind" in the New Amsterdam Theatre Company's concert of Kern's Sweet Adeline.

I am going to begin my day with the laundry.  It's time.

DR elmore--do you remember who sang "Some Girl is on Your Mind?"  Was it the same cast as on the Showstoppers CD?

I had hoped my Twilight Times Blu rays might have arrived today.

A quick check at the site from which I ordered them revealed there were not shipped until TODAY!

Oh, well...

No. It was Judy Kaye, Richard Muenz, Scott Reeve, David Hickox, and the men's chorus
