Two of my favorite TOD moments happened on The Donald O'Conner Show which was on in the afternoons (in Indy) for a year or so.....I have mentioned one that featured Joan Baez....aka Joanie Phonie.....
She would hardly speak to Donald at all. At the time her husband was facing jail time for evading the draft and other political problems, and Joan had been to prison for protesting the war herself.. He would ask her a question and she wouldn't say a word. So finally he said: "What would you like to talk about?"
Joan snapped: "You have questions on your card there, just ask them."
And Donald looked her in the eye and asked: "Okay, sister, how did you like it up the river?"
And on a later episode he had Keefe Brasselle, Barrie Chase, and Rod Serling on....I had never seen Rod on a talk show. He was hilarious. Keefe was selling his book and Barrie had just put out a record, and Rod was talking about a movie he was in.
Toward the end, Rod just started laughing.....Donald asked him what was funny. Rod said: "You have a quite a crew on today, an actor trying to be a writer, and writer trying be an actor, and a dancer trying to be a singer. I actually don't need any of this."
Donald said: "Really?"
Rod: "Of course not, I married money. My wife has over $500 in the bank!"
