Today, I'm "stranded" over here in the East Bay as one of the major bridges are closed for repair this weekend.  So, I've planned my weekend accordingly.  The goal today is to unpack as much as possible and try and sort out my life.  It's a gloomy day here, not very much motivation... but we press on!

A question for the populace at large:

For some reason I thought I had the Jay recording of WEST SIDE STORY, but I've convinced myself that I was mistaken on that point.  Which means I've probably never heard it.

So, how good is it?  Or rather, which "complete" recording(s) is(are) the best?  In your humble opinions, of course.  Actually, wasn't this discussed not too long ago when the San Francisco one was happening?

I am very fond of the JAY WEST SIDE STORY.  It used a lot of the cast of a West End rvival with a couple of ringers thrown in like the Maria, who's wonderful.  I also think Paul Manuel, the Tony, is wonderful.  The American accents come and go and the cuts Robbins made in the dance music are used, but I like it very much, one of the few complete JAY recordings I can say that about.

Would those be the optional cuts indicated in the score?

I kinda think THIS is quite clever and funny for those who might like a little Carmina in their day.

I was just using Google to reminisce about old record labels. I think the first LPs I was able/allowed to buy were on the Pickwick label because of their kiddie records, but there are many here that are fun to remember:

TOD:

I always enjoyed Merv Griffin when he would take a recently popular song and MERVify it. I can't find it, but I remember Merv warbling "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" to Jack Sheldon's horn and the Mort Lindsay Orchestra.

I also remember Merv "Mervifying" the Bobby Goldsboro hit "The Straight Life" (Sonny Curtis) as a duet with Jack Sheldon, who I later learned was a good friend of Jack Webb, which explains his numerous appearances on MARK VII (Webb Prods.) programs. Even later, I would often think back with the allegations or alle"gay"tions about Merv's proclivities, and thought that Merv singing this song was a kind of in-joke or perhaps a "try-and-catch me" moment of lounge-singing defiance.

My grandfather was an avid Merv watcher, so I would watch with him. My favorite guest was Orson Welles who would magically make broken timepieces work again just by us placing the item on the TV set. I couldn't figure out how he did that (now I think I know).

I also remember that Merv was the first show I saw John Williams on right before "Star Wars" began its initial release. If I remember correctly, there was an orchestra on that may have just been Mort Lindsay's augmented, or the actual L.A. Phil, but whoever it was, they did play something from the score. Merv, in his gushing sort of way, was throwing accolades all over the place, how you John Williams brought the movies back to the scores of Korngold and Steiner. This I found quite unusual for a talk show as it seemed to me to be rather "in the weeds" for a mainstream audience. I wrote down the details and thus started me on my love of soundtracks (original scores only please).

That, and the contemporaneous PBS series, "Previn and the Pittsburgh" which has its detractors for Previn's unhidden prickliness and disdain for some composers, I was later to find this out. But where else on standard TV could you see Rozsa and some of the old guard of movie composers actually conduct their music?

I can think of many other fond memories of Merv's show. It was cheap in comparison to Johnny's, but no less entertaining, if only sometimes for Merv's overly enthusiastic build-ups and his silk jacket linings with very mod-1970s patterns. I think he did leave the straight life behind.

And, of course, the devastatingly funny Rick Moranis parodies of Merv (and Cavett also) on SCTV!

I sit corrected.  In the current vocal and full scores they're not indicated at all.  I think I'm remembering them from the Schirmer score which I no longer have.  I do have a photocopy of the old handwritten one which has those and even some additional bars that were in the process of being removed.

(Haven't looked at this in a long time.  What got me back on it was the partially good, partially excruciating production I saw last night.)

Yes, I know!  I made too much money to qualify for a policy with a smaller deductible without a large monthly payment......so I took the best one I could that would not cost me $$$ I don't have.

Of course in the case of a catastrophic injury/illness....$5000 would be a drop in the bucket....and the rest would be covered.

Larry, I'm glad your TB test was negative. TB is no longer a thing of the past, unfortunately.

Hope your ultrasound gives some clues as to what is causing your lump/swelling and you're on your way to recovery very soon. One of the nice things about ultrasound is that it's painless! (I'm a fan of ultrasound technology and would like to see it used more often.)

Last Thursday I had plans for lunch with my friend Jan. Jan and I grew up together and her birthday is the day after mine, so we usually have a birthday lunch sometime in late May. She'll be out of town, so we had it this past week. She called me that morning to tell me that her friend Janis just learned that the daughter of a close friend in Scotland was murdered by her boyfriend. Arrrghhh! Jan asked if she could bring Janis along to lunch. Of course. I'd heard about Janis, but had never met her. I liked her and was glad we could offer some pleasant company during such a stressful time, but it did put a bit of a damper on a celebratory lunch. I can lunch with Jan again once she returns from vacation.

Netflix has a new orginal series, GRACE AND FRANKIE, with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. I watched an episode last night, but don't expect to watch much more. Has anyone else seen it?

I heard about it and was interested in checking it out, but I hadn't yet.

This photo was taken in the teeming port of Grand Turk.  My cruise ship is the blue one on the left.  The ship on the right is the Carnival ship, Fantasy.  Thirty-two years ago, when I first became a travel agent, Carnival flew me down to Miami to tour their ships.  The final ship we toured was their pride and joy, the Fantasy.

I've never been on a cruise ship.  It looks pretty darned impressive!
