DR George - so glad to hear that you finally had some good news, electronics-wise.        :)

Good morning, all!  I slept late, and I had a weird dream about working on a production of KISS ME KATE.

I must get to the post office this morning.  I have some hell to raise with them over an undelivered package.

The new 2-CD set of THE RETURN TO OZ score is quite wonderful.  For the weekend, I am going to finish up the first season of Father Brown mysteries, catch the last disc of season 1 of Miss Fisher's murder mysteries, and begin THE GAME OF THRONES.

Good morning, all.

All packed up for Austin this weekend. With two overnight bags, a shoe bag, a suitcase with my sleep machine bag stuffed in it, an ice chest, my laptop and who knows what all else, I feel as if I'm leaving for a month and not essentially two days.

Re: FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD

Back in the late 1990s, when he had his studio in Ireland and wanted to do some literary period films, Roger Corman asked me to write a screenplay adaptation of FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.

I suggested that, since the Julie Christie version was only about 20 years old and considered to be a minor classic, he might be better off adapting a work that, if it had been previously filmed, had a much lesser reputation.  Besides, on a Corman budget, we would never come close to the splendor of the earlier MADDING CROWD.

Roger saw my point, so I wound up adapting THE ASPERN PAPERS instead, setting it in Dublin, rather than Venice.

I know, but a paid writing assignment is a paid writing assignment.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), by the time I had finished the script, Corman had decided that he didn't want to make any more period films, since they were not selling in his key market.  I was fully paid, but the script was shelved.

Although I had previously sold him two of my original screenplays (both produced), this was my first Corman "assignment".  Others were soon to come.

The trip to the post office was a waste of time: they cannot locate the package, even though the tracking info says it's there.

I have to deal with Staples next. Oy!

Good morning, all.

And a late one it is.  I slept soundly till the phone woke me at 9:44!  That's almost unheard of these days, and boy did I need it.

Coffee!

I did a lot of '1776' listening this week, probably the most I've ever done.  But I was following the score closely and learning more about it than ever, and that was most satisfying.

I am kind of nervous even thinking about a Roger Corman version of FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.

Thanks to everyone here at HHW.....opening night was a great success.  We were nearly sold out - only three tickets left - and there are only a few single seats left for the rest of the weekend.  Next week with four performances has several tickets, but those will probably be sold easily in the next few days.....

Lots of new people in the show = lots of new people in the audience.....so we are happy.....of course it also means lots of $$$$ for the bottom line.

DR George it is nice when we get proper customer service.  We are at the point where we think something nice should be given us for all the times our key cards have stopped working.  The record breaking day was 3 new cards for Keith and 2 for me.  We hope they finally fixed the problem yesterday.

Madding Crowd has been a Masterpiece Theater mini-series and now a new movie since. It's one of my favorite Hardy novels, though The Mayor of Casterbridge may edge it out.

We had to read "Return of the Native" in high school, which was so bad (the teacher had a lot to do with my loathing that book) that I didn't read Hardy for another 25 years or so. It took seeing the film version of "Madding Crowd" to get me to go back to read him again.
