ABBREVIATIONS AND INITIALS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had abbreviations and initials, and now it is time for you to post until the abbreviated cows come home.

I loathe most abbreviations. When I worked at the census, we were forced to memorize a list of abbreviations. I ignored the task and made the abbreviation speakers say what they meant. So did a few others, and the office largely stopped using them. The worst part was that there were several terms with the same abbreviation, and you couldn't tell them apart by context. There were a couple of the former military types who actually used the abbreviation, said which one they meant and then used the abbreviation again. So, instead of abbreviating something, they made it three times as long.

Ida Lupino could do most anything. She was a solid director. She could act, sing, dance, tempt.

I love her performance as the chain-smoking cabaret singer in the film noir "Road House." (Not to be confused with the '80s hair movie starring Patrick Swayze.)

Well, I pulled another late one last night.  So here I am again, wondering where in the HELL my sleep went.

I was up late watching this good and bad documentary DVD called The Psycho Legacy, which is about the Psycho films with emphasis on II, III and IV.  The qualities of the documentary itself are kind of all over the place, but it's very enjoyable seeing some of the actors and production people talking about the films, not least our own Mr. Charles Pogue.

My fondness for the A&E series Bates Motel, and what with being between seasons and all, had me hankering lately for some kind of a fix, and returning to these sequels after many years seemed just the ticket.  It's more satisfying than I would have thought, especially as I had forgotten much of the ins and outs of each sequel.

There's a lot of material this thing covers well, and other stuff that's oddly sketchy for no apparent reason.  The use of faux-Herrmann music throughout is off-putting, and it goes oddly unremarked upon, even while Richard Band's faux-Herrmann scores in the Re-Animator films is being discussed.  Bizarre... but, you know, no more bizarre than Universal's own downright offensive use of faux-Herrmann music in the menus of their DVD and Blu-ray releases of Psycho and other Hitchcock films.  It's all rather mind boggling.  And as I am growing tired of typing faux-Herrmann -- there being no handy abbreviation for same -- I'll stop now.

Good morning, all!  It's a rainy morning and I slept in.  I dreamed I was on a European train and had to transfer in Antwerp, then I boarded a New York bus at 63rd Street, i think. I told the bus driver I only wanted to ride to the next stop because I just wanted to look at the map.

Last night, after watching The Other Boleyn Girl, I watched the uncut European print of the 1954 Kirk Douglas film Ulysses, which I doubt I've seen since 1954 or so.  The film was cut from 110 or so minutes to around 95 for the US release, so the undubbed sections were in Italian.  The cuts occurred in the weirdest places but some of the missing dialogue helped round out the story.

Today, I've got a few chores and then I may do some reading or watch a DVD.  I marched with the men's chorus in the Gay Pride parade for about fifteen years between 1981 and 1997, but I have no urge to hobble about on a cane in the huge crowds in the Village today.

I'm staying in. I hope the weather clears up for the marchers and celebrants.

I learned tons of abbreviations when I learned shorthand. I know two different kinds. And I haven't used either in over 30 years.

DR Laura, I took a semester of Gregg "Notehand" -- a less short, easier to learn form of Shorthand -- in high school, and loved it.  I might have used it a little bit in college, not sure, but I still remember some of the principles, and I think the whole system was a product of genius.

That is terrible.  I can also be sensitive, fortunately I find the rainbows subtle.  if you scroll the pages extra slowly does it help?

Sunday morning greetings from the Moscone Center!  We were on a shuttle before 7am and breezed across Market Street.  Had a nice breakfast at La Boulange and now I'm waiting for my first session to begin.
