Unbelievable how this happens sometimes, but I was in the shower and suddenly the name of one of those coffee shops came to me: Ed's Coffee Shop at 460 N. Robertson Blvd. Tiny thing, hole in the wall. And like a few of us, still there.

Okay, I'm outta here. Back this evening.

First, some coffee shops whose names are unknown but I have nice memories of a few visits:

The one (Greek-owned or named?) in the same block -- and destroyed in the same fire -- as M'Goo's on Hollywood Blvd.
One on the north side of Franklin near Wilcox (early '70s).
East side of Robertson around Third or Alden or maybe up near Melrose (late '80s).
North side of Wilshire near Doheny, in the first floor of an office building, which we thought might have been a Stats (mid '70s).
South side of Wilshire in Westwood, first floor of a building between the Federal Building near the 405 and Westwood Blvd. (late '70s).

Johnny's Steak House on Hollywood Blvd., just east of the House of Pies at Whitley. I think it had a less than stellar reputation, but for me it was a part of the incredible and lively landscape of the Boulevard. Early '70s.

New York George, way east on Fountain Ave. -- I see it's now something else entirely, but I remember going down there a few times and eating a weekend breakfast on the patio whilst pursing the Calendar and View sections of the Sunday L.A. Times. So-so food, but enjoyable. Late '80s.

Nibbler's Restaurant, north side of Wilshire in the Hancock Park district, maybe near the Carnation Building (?). Again, on the first floor of a commercial building (the one at S. Hudson looks possible). Late '80s.

The Bratskellar in Westwood, which I only ate in once or twice in 1972-73. I loved it, but all I remember is that whatever I had was some kind of sweet-and-sour type of chicken or beef dish that was very yummy.

Nibbler's was actually in the first floor of an office building but not down there - it was between La Cienega and San Vicente on Wilshire.

I suppose there could have been a Stat's at Wilshire and Doheny in an office building, but there was definitely one on Wilshire, again at San Vicente, south side of the street in a classic coffee shop building, I think.

TOD: I love to try anything new. This morning, for example, I made some fig jam for the first time.

I have a bumper crop of figs this year. May make a fig- cherry salad later.

Yesterday, I received the original French cast recording of Le Passe-Muraille, which is the original French version of what became Amour. This recording from France is in French and has no English translations in the booklet at all. What's nice is that it's a 2-CD set of a live recording of the whole show. I have no idea what they're singing about (and I haven't listened to Amour in several years), but I'm enjoying it very much.

Nick has come and gone and I must go eat and pick up my copy of Go Set a Watchman, which has arrived. Hilarious that there are already sixty-seven Amazon reviews - really? No one got this early - they all got it today. At least a few of them admit to having only read a couple of chapters before giving it their five-star reviews. What a world. I understand that a few of them are from Kindle and those purchases downloaded at midnight last night. But are people really reading this close to three hundred page book in an hour or two?

And if you haven't written your Murder at the Hollywood Division, which we know some of you haven't, please do.

I put a hold on the Kindle edition of "Go Set a Watchman" and there are two people ahead of me for two copies. So, the earliest that I can download it is next week. It depends on how long the current readers have their lending periods set for.

Today I went online and was looking at the explanation of benefits for my health insurance when I realized they were charging me two copays for one trip to the emergency room. Since my ER copay is $350, that's a lot. I called BCBS and the customer service rep said because the visit covered two calendar days I had to pay two copays. When I explained I went in at 11:45 PM and left at 3:00 AM, it wasn't two days it was three hours in one visit. She said I could go to the website and find the appeal forms. I was fuming. This is ridiculous. I went to the company FB page and posted how ridiculous this was. I got a response about contacting customer service so I responded publically that I had done that and what they said. I got a message asking for my phone number. I then tried calling the hospital

When I couldn't get a hold of billing at the hospital I went down there. The billing department was very supportive. They also thought that was insane. Especially since they only billed me for one visit. They said they couldn't do anything until they had actually received the payment from the insurance company. But they would follow it and let me know

A little while later I got a call from BCBS again. They are going to see about reviewing my claim and possibly adjusting it before I appeal. Don't know if that will happen, but a public posting seems to have gotten a better response than anything else.

Tomorrow morning. I check in at 8:30 and the surgery is at 10:00. My brother is picking up my parents and they will also get to the surgery center around 8:30 am. I'm not planning to take my phone, but will post something when I get home.
