I suppose I'm up after a whopping three hours of sleep.  I'll try to get more in a bit.  Guess we've had our rainfall because the damn sun is out.  Also, we were discussing the Coffee Dan's at Hollywood and Cahuenga, the one I went to - and cousin Dee Dee also only went to that one - I was sure it was on the south side of the street but she was positive it was on the north side.  I couldn't imagine where that would be, but I found it this morning.  There are several driving shots on Hollywood Blvd. from various years - I could see nothing that even resembled a restaurant on the south side so I began concentrating on the left.  But most of the video image was too indistinct although my eye kept going to one particular building but I could not see the sign well enough and it just didn't look right - but I finally found one driving shot that was pretty sharp.  I concentrated on that building and indeed it's Coffee Dan's - located exactly two doors east of Cahuenga and a few doors west of the Warner Cinerama (later the Pacific's), which makes perfect sense, since that's where I would have eaten before seeing Brothers Grimm and How the West Was Won.  This shot was taken in 1962 - I have no idea when Coffee Dan's opened there or when it closed, but now that I know where it is I can probably narrow that down.  And from one site I read, it was a covert hangout for gays of that era.  Who knew?  So, you'll see the Warner Cinerama on your left, which is located between Wilcox and Cahuenga.  As you pass it you'll see a yellow sign on the left that says "Free Jobs" and next to it a pink building - that's Coffee Dan's - if you freeze the image at exactly :28 and go into full screen mode you can finally make out the sign.  Whew!

Just ran the shot from 1949 and no Coffee Dan's there.

You can see Aldo's, which I remember from 1972/73, to the left of the Free Jobs sign.

Aldo's sign shows up nicer in one called "Hollywood Blvd 1957".  But I can't confirm Coffee Dan's in that one.

(Sorry for no URLs -- I'm on the iPad -- does anybody know how to copy/past URLs from Safari or any other iPad browser?)

I forgot to say the other day that that segment in THE LOVED ONE is incredible, and it's too bad they repeated some footage instead of giving us more!  But I need to revisit that.  Did it by any chance include that block?

Just clicking on these at random...

In "Los Angeles in the 50s", what is that shopping area at :55?  (It follows people lined up to see THE ROBE at the Chinese.)

Published on July 3rd (4 days before my surgery), MISS DINAH SHORE seems to be selling okay on its own.  I certainly haven't felt well enough to promote it until now.  As I told my publisher, people will either want to read a biography of Dinah Shore, or they won't.  Thankfully, I guess they do.   :)

http://www.amazon.com/Miss-Dinah-Shore-Michael-Druxman/dp/1593938462/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1436102515&sr=1-1&keywords=miss+dinah+shore

That should cheer you up while you recover.

Here's something funny -- apparently the pedestrian right of way laws weren't in effect in the 1950s/1960s.  :)

Couple of interesting close calls, traffic-wise, too.

Also 1967, but at night.  You can just catch it at 2:42 -- it's right between "Free Jobs" and Florsheim.

We watched DRIVING MISS DAISY with James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury last night.

Enjoyed it, but it took me awhile to get used to the fact that I was watching a theatrical performance on television.

I was able to record it and make a DVD. :)

The doctor says it's going to be, at least, another two weeks before I can put any weight on my left foot.

I hate being so dependent on other people.  I particularly worry about my wife, who has had 4 back surgeries and has to be there for me to lean on her when I need to get up.

 :(
