I spent much of yesterday at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute, having my eyes tested and evaluated for cataract surgery, ala TCB. I'd been trying to put this off as long as possible, but reading is getting difficult and it needs to be done sooner rather than later. This is why I've been bugging TCB about how he's doing and some of the details.

My cousin, who LOVES TV, raves about how she's able to watch without glasses. But my concerns are the opposite: I'm on the computer most of the day and don't need great distance vision. I'm used to being very near-sighted and am happy to wear glasses when I drive or go outside. The surgeon and I discussed this and I'm glad he could see my point. Most correction is done for distance, but I really don't want that. I need to be able to see close-up. He plans to correct my eyes to a minus 2. (I'm currently a minus 8.) He'll be correcting my astigmatism as well.

I'll be spending the extra bucks to have this take place. (Medicare pays for cataract removal, but not the intraocular lens.) I was quoted $1800 per eye, plus I'm sure there'll be some extra charges along the way. So $4500 or so that I hadn't planned on. I'll still need glasses, but the Rx will be much more normal, so I'll be able to buy them from Warby Parker or Costco. At present, my lenses are very expensive and usually can only be done from certain labs.

This is not Lasik. It is correction from the replacement lens. I don't know how many people who have cataract surgery opt for the more expensive lens, but I do know that cataract surgery is very common.

This was sent to me from one of the UCLA staffers. It is more than you ever wanted to know about cataract surgery and perhaps not for the faint of heart. It is animation, not live people.

I have had a lot of anxiety over this upcoming surgery. I'm a wus in some ways and for this I am super-wus. Everyone's been scoffing at me, saying what an easy surgery it is, but no one was giving me any real information! Yesterday was very important in terms of having my concerns addressed. I like the surgeon and am very glad we seem to be in sync. I'm still nervous about it, but not quite as much. I keep reminding myself of the benefits I'll receive.

I feel the same way. I even miss the Big Donut on Washington Blvd and Sepulveda (Culver City). It didn't exactly lend itself to other businesses, but it was such a unique--and quirky--landmark!

I think most people are very nervous about the first eye. Keith watched a video of the surgery which was a Big mistake. He said it was a breeze and he didn't feel a thing.

I will be very interested in the results of your eye correction and what your vision is like.

Thanks for all the cataract info, DR Jeanne. Best of luck with it, though it's a couple of months off and of course you'll do fine!

I'm only wondering about one thing you said -- about Medicare paying for the procedure but not for the lens (?). I hadn't heard that. My optometrist did tell me that they don't pay for the newer laser version of the surgery. He opted for that himself but had to pay out of pocket. But he said they cover the traditional one. Well, as you can see (or "see"), I've got a lot to learn about this. It'll be a few years before I need it, but I'll definitely need it.

I'm back from Sandy's show. She was terrific and the audience was very enthusiastic! I think she sang all the songs from the CD. I was hoping that her encore would be "Simply," and it was! Not only did Sandy pass around trays of chocolate chip cookies while she sang "Here on Earth," we also had kazoos at our seats to use during the chorus of "Two Roads!" Lots of fun!
