I slept poorly: around 2:30AM, after about 3.5 hrs of sleep, I was wide awake and remained so for about two hours. Part of the problem was that nothing I had taken would relieve the god-awful pains in my left leg and I couldn't stop brooding over a wrong done me by a person I considered a good friend.  This was not Mr Raines, but someone I recommended for a London job in 2014.

Since I have to be at City Center around 10:00 and in fine fettle, I am a bit concerned about staying awake.  I am looking forwards to seeing Joshie.

Tonight, my neighbor Roberta is coming by to help me with a Senior Citizen Rent Reduction. Form and I do not agree. I think I have everything I need for this.

And a happy birthday to Julie who I met on the very first day I met anyone here.  Obviously the experience was more than she could handle.  Ah well, such is life.

Loved the Ed Sullivan excerpt.  Oh man, what a different world it was then.  The fact that this simple and wonderful thing apparently cannot be recreated now is staggering.

But do you want to know something contemporary that comes close, in a way?  The NPR show "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me."

And something else that at times could reach that level of wit and urbanity?  The Metropolitan Opera intermission features with the panel.

Radio, man.  Our last best hope?

I haven't braved it yet to see how much snow fell overnight.

TOD:

My first trip to New York was in the 1970s.  I was there with publicity client actor Gary Lockwood, who co-owed a company that made hang-gliders, to do WHAT'S MY LINE?.  He wasn't the mystery guest.  The panel had to guess his other occupation.

With clients Jack Carter and Steve Kanaly, I also attended tapings of THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES, and with Carter, I booked him on THE MOVIE GAME where we encountered Jane Fonda, then in her anti-war mode.  I write about that in my 2nd memoir, LIFE. LIBERTY & THE PURSUIT OF HOLLYWOOD.

Never saw a game show taped but I was a potential lifeline for a friend who was on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? He didn't use me but he did win $75,000 before he quit.

Today we are in Recife, Brazil.  We took a tour of the town and the UNSECO world heritage of Olinda.  Our tour guide was an annoying, caricature version of Eli Wallach  :D

Yes DR VIXMOM you described Concentration.....they also had a "Steal" panel - if you matched that, you could steal one of your opponents prizes!

DR TCB - there was a show called SAY WHEN.....maybe Art James was on vacation and Ed was filling in.

We always watched WML on Sunday night.....it was followed by Candid Camera, I think.  I loved the show, but hated it because it meant school the next day.  I thought Arlene and Dorothy were very glamorous and Bennett and John were very smart and funny.

One night Arlene mentioned that she and her husband and friends were going to the Peppermint Lounge to do the Twist, and I thought why in the world would those OLD people be doing that!!

I liked The Price Is Right, Truth or Consequences, To Tell the Truth (especially Polly Bergen but NOT Tom Poston, who was such a pill)  I've Got a Secret.

The Movie Game was weird....in that most of the older stars didn't know as much as the younger stars about movies.....Burt Reynolds was great!!  Shelley Winters was on and in the middle of a game, suddenly she looked at the host Larry Blyden and said....  "Oh.....I know who you are now.....you were married to that cute little dancer in The Pajama Game...."  He replied dryly:  "Yes, I used to be...."  Carol Haney and Larry were divorced and in fact Carol had already died by the time the show was on , and Larry was raising their two kids by himself....and then he was killed in car accident in Morrocco...

Ugh....even worse than I thought:

A rabid collector of antiquities, who would often travel to the furtherest corners of the world in pursuit of a find, Blyden was investigating just such a dig in Morocco when he was killed at the age of 49. According to former co-star Dina Merrill he was carjacked by bandits who killed him and took the car and his valuables. Because there was no identification on the body, his family did not learn of the tragedy for several days afterward.

Monday morning greetings!  Day 3 of my post-Christmas cold and I am no longer amused.  At least I've had an absorbing book to occupy me while sneezing and coughing:

Once on the movie game,  the poster for HOUSE OF WAX was up....and Vera Miles said: "Oh I was supposed to be in that movie. On Friday I had the job, and on Monday I walked in and they said I was out and Phyllis Kirk was in.  I always wondered what happened that weekend...."

Kathryn Grayson looked at her and said:  "Well.....that's show business!"

The book covers the time period I was in 7th and 8th grades in Detroit.  There's a lot that's familiar, but it's mostly about all the grown-up stuff that was going on while I was more preoccupied with Camp Fire Girls and having my bedroom painted pink and purple.

Is that book about Motown DR GINNY?

Motown is one of the major "characters," DR JRand.  Also, race relations and Detroit's failed bid to host the 1968 Summer Olympics.
