After last night's performance of "The Credeaux Canvas," several of us went to a local sports bar to hang out and chat. We went to this place because it was felt that it wouldn't be too crowded (it wasn't) and there would be enough room for everyone (there was).

I'd been looking forward to reports on whatever this MY FAIR LADY was up to. And BK does not disappoint.

This is hopefully a bit of an exaggeration, but it seems like it's "business as usual" for an awful lot of theater groups around L.A. to use tracks. I know I'm not yer typical audience member -- I'm probably not yer typical musician, either -- but the artificiality of live production over tracks is something I can't adapt to.

If a group can't hire a band, I would honestly rather hear some schmoe keeping it simple -- and keeping it live -- by pounding it out (really well, of course) on a piano. And if a young kids' production can't hire even that much and must use tracks, I'd rather have that kept to scale and the tracks be of a small band than of a full professional orchestra. (There's a MUSIC MAN production on YouTube that's a bunch of tiny kids acting/singing over what could be the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics combined, which is jarring and, for my taste, wholly inappropriate.)

Let's just be grateful that people are indeed still sticking to book in a book musical like MY FAIR LADY. BK's post-apocalyptic vision will come true soon enough, and hopefully we'll all be gone when it does.

Today, for my own whoring contribution to the artificiality and downgrading of landmark musical scores, I'll be programming my "synth string" setups for GYPSY. In my defense, this is for a small community theater company who can hire a band, but not a full orchestra -- and their band size for this show will be twelve, as opposed to a more typical four to six, utilizing excellent reeds and brass players, so I am their only compromise. And it will all be live, baby. Live.

I shall also take a tiny step further into the 21st Century by learning the basics of annotation in ForScore on the iPad. The iPad is where this string reduction resides, and rather than take the easy route of printing it out, this shall be my debut playing off it, complete with pedal page-turning, etc. By God, if Boswell can do it for Kritzerland, then DR ChasSmith can take a stab at it for a li'l production in the park.

To those who celebrate, Happy Easter felicitations! This was always my least favorite holiday in the Christian calendar for so many reasons, but to spare the true believers, I'll only deal with family hypocrisy, which - after ignoring a year of Sunday services - compelled my mother's family, all brothers and sisters and their children, to dress up and attend a long service and then spend the day in a huge and long reunion. It was hell.

On a positive side, my mother's Easter ham with scalloped potatoes was always a winner.

DR Cillaliz, I didn't look at my original post to see if I didn't make sense. But my shoulder/neck problem was not caused by coloring. I just couldn't color because my neck/shoulder muscle was hurting. And it aggravated it when I colored.

Easter Sunday greetings! Fr. Richard is conducting Easter mass in Lima, Rob and Mary Linda just left for their church, and I'm home being Martha (biblical, not Stewart). Well, maybe a little Stewart. My reaction to the Mary/Martha bible story is: "Somebody has to be Martha!"

DR CHAS SMITH we do not use tracks at our theatre. BUT in this neck of the woods, pianists are difficult to find. We now are at the point of auditions next Sunday, and no pianist for the first 11 rehearsals to follow. We have asked several people. It's the main reason I don't like to direct a musical here....you can't get a piano player.

You would think in a college town, ONE person would say yes.

Our pianist is doing a show at the local high school. Everyone we ask says no....eventually....usually after leaving us hanging for several days....so I can see why some groups just say.....to hell with it.....
