Yesterday was a fun day at the office.  Lots of interesting, even challenging, work - one project after another.  The day flies by when that happens and it reminds me how much I like this numbers work when it's about interesting work.

Good morning, all.

Plenty of rain last night, but thankfully no storms that I was aware of.

And, I think, some eggs.

The usual crazy dreams -- one of which took me to the San Fernando Valley and starred BK and some other people I can almost but not quite identify, and involved me at one point having to do my best at driving in reverse for some distance down Ventura Blvd.

I have no real plans today beyond finishing up my gift orchestration.  I want to get back to the Moross score.  Scott, my copyist, sent me a weekend email: when are you beginning Act Two?

In summer 1968, I worked on a production of BYE BYE BIRDIE, and all the teens were theatre students from Tallawanda High School in Oxford, OH.  The girl who played Kim McAfee is now married to actor Andrew Prine I still keep in touch with several in the cast. She was what we'd now call a "Mean Girl," and a nasty piece of work.

I still keep in touch with a lot of the "kids" in the show: one of the boys in the cast now works at the Metropolitan Opera, the boy who played Hugo Peabody works in LA as a leadman on TV and film. One of my friends from the show is coming into Manhattan next week, and while his wife is in conferences at the UN, he's asked me to be his date to see a couple of shows. I've been sending hm links to tickets, etc.  I last saw him around 20 years ago when he was in the City for a couple of weeks.  We lost touch when I changed my phone service from AT&T to Time Warner and my name in information changed from my professional name to my full name.

I'm curious to see feedback from friends who saw the dress of 1776 last night.  Our DR ChasSmith and his friends who came to one of the Kritzerland show are seeing it tonight. I hope they have a wonderful time!

Oddly, a post of mine just disappeared.  What did I do?  Oh well.  Here it is again:

Enjoyed the notes.  Now I want to hear all the songs about which BK can say no more.

I hadn't asked, and I'll find out for myself tonight -- but I'm especially curious considering the extensive dramatic scenes, as to whether, or how much, they'll be trimming the book.

Much to look forward to!

Just a guess, but since they're putting in the intermission, perhaps not much at all?

I've heard they're doing 95+% of the book, possibly all of it.  What I won't know until I see it on Saturday is what the costumes are like.  Most of the nice comments I've seen are about how good the orchestrations are.  One FB friend praised me, and I responded with this:
thank you for the compliment, but it really deserves to go to my colleague and adopted son, Josh Clayton, who is one amazingly talented young man: orchestrator, archeologist, copyist, and my favorite collaborator. He's City Center Encores! behind-the-scenes genius and I am lucky that he chose me to be a friend and mentor. He did the hard work, and I proofread and threw in my two cents worth of opinion.

I know it was unintentional since this drawing is a couple of years old, but doesn't the guy in this ad for my play, HAIL ON THE CHIEF!, remind you of somebody who is currently running for President?

Ask BK Day:
Bruce, why do you sometimes watch movies you admittedly KNOW are going to be bad even before you sit down?

The Kritzerland show sounds wonderful!!!  I hope to win the lottery between now and the LA Show, so that I can be in attendance for that.

DR ELMORE - we need photos of the reunion!

I've had house painters here all week, and they have started at 7.  That's not bad since I'm up anyway to get ready for work and all that.  But now it means I have to be READY by 7 and not just up.  The noise at 7 isn't bad  (and it starts two hours later than the construction and garbage trucks across the street).  I'll be very glad when it's all over.  So will Sugar.

It's almost a silly understatement to say that compliments to either or the both of yez are hugely deserved.

The way this score sounds as played by this orchestra is impossible to describe to those who aren't hearing it.

And I never got around to saying this after the reading, but it was great to see/hear Ben Whitely in action.  He seems so easygoing ... but frankly, I was surprised to find how relaxed and easygoing Rob Berman is in rehearsal.  These guys are just supremely competent.
