Today, I am not going in to work. I've taken the day off, and the family will be showing the town of Olympia to the visiting aunt and uncle from Germany. We will first meet for lunch at a local Chinese buffet restaurant, then we'll go downtown to Olympia's Farmer's Market and walk around there for a while.

After that, I don't know what we'll do or where we'll go, but tonight is the Pay-What-You-Can performance of "The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged)." I have to get new programs printed, so I won't be galavanting around town too late into the evening. After the show, I'll go home and sleep.

Around 7:30, I will head out to my podiatrist on 22nd Street and Fifth Avenue. These days, between the damned buses and the ridiculous traffic mess, I have no idea gow long it will take. I coud once do it in 40 minutes, but my trup on Tuesday went over an hour and that was to 50th Street. The situation is outrageous.

With the exception of John Wayne who was a better "Rooster Cogburn" than Jeff Bridges (Wayne played the role with more humor), I think that the Coen Brothers' remake of TRUE GRIT was much better than the original.

Beyond that, I can't think of a remake of a major film that outdid the original.

Too bad about those subtitles.

BK:. I haven't watched it in a while, but does Night Tide (1961) contain any shots that are particularly revealing for you? I always enjoyed the carousel setting, and there are bits of Venice... well, I need to get back to it myself.

I had a nice experience at my local Best Buy yesterday.

I went in to get the CD for BRIGHT STAR, which they didn't have in stock. They said they could order and have it delivered to me within a week. I said "Okay," but then they said there would be a $4-$5 shipping fee, so I told them to forget it. I'd try Wal-Mart or Target. At that point, the manager said that they would wave the shipping fee and the deal was done.

Competition is a wonderful thing.

The 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The original is one of my favorite movies, so it doesn't replace it -- it holds its own as a genius rethinking of the story, with cinematography, use of location, score, and resulting mood that for me have grown to rank right up there with the best of 1970s cinema.

Some good remakes have already been mentioned:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers
True Grit (although I also liked John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn more)

I thought the 1994 remake of Little Women was better than the 1948 and 1933 versions.

Yes, the remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" was very good.
I also rather liked the remake of "Fun With Dick and Jane". I don't know that it was better than the original, but it was fun and cute and Tea Leoni is great in everything. And speaking of her, if you sort of consider "The Family Man" to be a remake of "It's a Wonderful Life" that's a perfectly charming movie also.
I don't know that I've seen very many remakes. The only other one I can think of was "Freaky Friday" and that didn't really hold up. But then again, even the original movie wasn't nearly as good as the book.
