DR Ginny is the Middletown that J.D. Vance described the same as the Middletown you know?

DR Jane, I wasn't very far into it before I commented to Richard that J. D.'s Middletown reality and ours were entirely different.  The more valid comparison would be between him and Rob, because they're about the same age.  Rob was raised in a stable household by 2 professional parents and we all have the same last name.  We saw that he got to school every day, except when he was sick of course, and we provided enrichment in the form of Scouts, travel, church, etc.  The 2 guys attended the same high school, but Rob was clearly on a college-prep track that included taking classes at the Miami University campus during his senior year.  To my recollection, he only saw his parents clash (mildly) once and that was traumatic enough.  I'm not denying that many families like J. D.'s still exist here, but their circumstances are not Middletown's fault.

J. D. was the speaker at last night's Middletown Community Foundation annual meeting and will speak next Wednesday at Miami University in Oxford.  Several of us are going to hear him then.  His book is well-written, but he comes across as very impressed with his own accomplishments.  He is not the only Middletonian to attend an elite east coast university - my friend Emilie graduated from Wellesley in the 1950's and Betty's daughter from the Yale School of Drama more recently.

I'm looking forward to discussing the book with my friends next Thursday evening.

I find it interesting they went to the same high school, or is there only one high school in Middletown?  I am not surprised his Vance's Middletown is different than yours.  I actually would have been more surprised if they were the same.

He wrote most of the book while he was in college and needed to be impressed with himself.  As one who came from a dysfunctional family, though definitely in better circumstances, I could relate to his struggle.

BK - that happens to me all the time.  Just point your toe as forward as you can and that will stop the spazzing.  You may hurt for a bit until you walk on it, but that's the best way to stretch it out again

Forward, not back?  Interesting.

Yes, DR Jane, there's only one public high school in Middletown.  There's also a Catholic high school that draws from Middletown and surrounding communities.

When Richard and I were out doing errands late this afternoon we drove down the block where J. D.'s grandparents lived.  It's the neighborhood where Richard's family lived in the 1950's and '60's, but has deteriorated a lot since then.  When Rob did a police ride-along as part of his paramedic training he learned that it's one of the high-crime parts of town now.

And the grocery store where J. D. worked when he was in high school?  It was the go-to place when I needed to send Richard for something I needed for a cooking project in progress.  He probably waited on us.  The Dillman's chain closed and that building is now a dollar store.

I just finished watching this.  Its tonight's Paddy Considine film.  1984, Gays and Lesbians Support the Striking Welsh Miners, a true story, Timely, amazing, heartbreaking, funny.  It was quite wonderful, and the cast is excellent. The leads are good and there are some wonderful cameos: Russell Tovey has a frightening  and unsettling 5-minute turn as  (I think) an AIDS victim out for one last party before he dies.

I mean I know that 11/11 Is Veteran's Day, but I was thinking that it was one of those holidays that was moved to a Monday to make a three-day weekend.
