Today is my uncle's funeral, so we are getting ready for that.  Being retired, it is strange having an obligation on a weekday.

But that's okay.  Since I lost weight, I have more of a choice of suits to wear....perhaps I shall find one I haven't worn in a awhile and give it a chance to be seen.

I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep, I think.  The sun is shining and if it's a little warmer today I may actually try a jog.

I loved Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel, but that was enough.  I think Ketti Frings' wonderful play makes dramatic order from a chaotic novel.

What DR Elmore is too modest to tell you is that he directed a wonderful production of the play here in Middletown in 1976.  He let me play Helen Gant, in the center in the apron:

That's a great picture, Ginny. :)

It is a great picture, Ginny.

I agree with Elmore. The play was more enjoyable than the novel, largely because it was streamlined and more focused.

I remember there was a TV adaptation of Look Homeward, Angel from the early 1970s, but I can't remember much about it.

Back from Shake Shack, where I enjoyed a delicious and delovely double cheeseburger and an okay but overpriced root beer.

Confession:  I find their fries boring for such a quality jernt (an opinion heard far and wide).  (That's not the confession, btw.  Read on...)

For my taste, a heap of boring fries is the stupidest intake of bad carbs this side of a heaping plate of white bread, and so I asked myself:  "Self, what could possibly be better than a side dish of -- instead of fries, a single cheeseburger?"

I'm all agape, agog and, probably aghast, that DR ChasSmith has not informed us of what is better.

Jane, carve out a lot of time if you want to read Thomas Wolfe. I don't think he ever met a paragraph he couldn't lengthen. Often unnecessarily.

If I remember correctly, I read Look Homeward Angel, Of Time and the River and You Can't Go Home Again, all back when I was a lot younger. By the third, I had had enough.

Then again, I never thought I'd adjust to Proust's page-long sentences and 12-page paragraphs.

I figured that out watching the movie ;D

Thanks for your input.  I suspect I will only read one of the books.

I remember there was a TV adaptation of Look Homeward, Angel from the early 1970s, but I can't remember much about it.

I never understood why this Pulitzer Prize winning play wasn't ever filmed.  They wanted Bette Davis to star as Eliza Gant in the play, but ended up with Jo Van Fleet. Davis would have been wonderful for a film adaptation.

I keep hoping it will turn up on DVD: Geraldine Page as Eliza Gant, E.G. Marshall as W.O. Gant, Timothy Bottoms as Eugene Gant (Thomas Wolfe), James Naughton as Ben Gant, Nancy Marchand as Madame Eliabeth, Doris Roberts as Fatty Pert.

Are you still loosing weight or have you lost all you need/want to?

I hope the funeral gave comfort to everyone who loved your uncle.

Interesting as the novel was streamlined from the original draft, and later published in its full glory.

Isn't there a museum in New York where they've archived TV programs?
